Hi all. Had a tinker this evening after coming back from the boat. So took all your advice and rigged up a 12v supply to the small spade with an inline switch. Fired up the engine ( it's really easy to start) and it's knocking out 15.91 volts. So it's working but is it too much or will it just charge the batteries quicker? Cheers. Jed. Got mum and dad on led tv so it's just the water pump and odd light really. Can't really have anything like expensive solar panels and wind generators as there is a fair bit of theft. This old thing can be wheeled from the farm shed.

higher than 14v will generally knacker a battery quicker. Clean the terminals of all rust/corrosion, as this can upset things, and give false voltage spikes/etc

Was that with a battery connected to the alternator as load?

Yes it was a normal battery. I wonder if bigger bulb or an in line resister might bring it down. Just wondering though if I should be looping across to another connection on the alternator or something .

the little bulb only helps get it going - once it's making power, the bulb is null and void in operation Give those rusty connections a clean ya lazy git

That bilb should go out once it's charging something not quite right there if it's staying on when it's in use.

ah... if you look, he's got the bulb fitted to the correct bit, but then fitted to EARTH. The other end has to be to the battery 12v.
Actually surprised it even started making a voltage tbh
EDIT: Actually, you can see that he's also got the 12v supply/feed going to the same point. Which won't be helping

Just threw this together - might make it clearer The two big rectangles are the two big spades... just in case it wasn't obvious

ahh thanks for that. so take a 12v positve supply from the battery to the bulb, and the carry it on to the small spade. use the earth from the battery to the other side of the bulb?

earth from the battery only needs to fit up to the body of the alt - the bulb ONLY goes between the battery 12v+, and the small spade... nowhere else

got it! its cos the bulb at the moment is not pruducing any resistance as i have wired the small spade directly to the battery and just piggy backed the bulb from it.

Do as Chairchild says on the wiring.
If it's still putting out high voltage (anything more than 14.2) then the regulator is shot.
You can buy a replacement from most autoelectrical suppliers for about £15-20 and whilst sometimes a little fiddly they're not hard to fit

the regulator on this type is a doddle to swap over if it is dead The three small bolts are removed, along with the small spade connection on the side of it, then it just wiggles out, along with the two carbon brushes. Fitment is reverse of removal. All the bulb does, is supply a bit of power to get the regulator circuit going. Once the alternator's making power, that small connection actually goes positive. So at this point, both sides of the bulb are positive, and it goes out (it's also why you can't really replace the bulb with an LED)

it couldnt see it at first i couldnt get my head around the bulb not having an earth. the 12v positive from the battery just comes into the bulb and back out again and onto the small spade. . soon as get home will have a fiddle.

Yayyyy!!! Works a treat! 14.6 volts pumping out steadily! Thanks very much for the help, diagrams and words. brilliant! Cheers Jed

Here we go. Here's the 12v genny working fine and doing its stuff. Dad was made up with it and can start it easily. Thanks so much to all that helped. Cheers. Jed
