Hi again,
another question regarding SJ410.
Unfortunately, these little bad boys only come packed with a measely 978cc engine!
I don't mind driving it around for now, but when the time comes and it dies, I would like to know my options.
How realistic is it to swap out the engine for something juicey. 1.8 or 2.0 petrol engine. Are there any engines known to be easier swaps? I understand it would not be straight forward by any means, and would have to pay someone skilled to carry out the job.
I know its quite a vague question, but...
anyone know any garage that could carry out the job, or perhaps someone on here?
and roughly how much I'm looking at for such a conversion?
and engine suggestions?
cheers

they don't really need a 2.0 engine, when you go to an engine that big you start getting halfshaft gearbox and propshaft issues.
the 1600 G16 will go in fairly easily though, form memory you'd need an adapter plate to get the gearbox to bolt up but its only a bit of steel plate.

I really don't mind the engine, just needs to be reliable and at least 100bhp ideally. I don't take it off-road, so it won't need 4x4 capabilities. The body is light, so a nippy little engine with rwd would be ideal - I just haven't got a clue on what it takes for an engine swap. for example, could you take a vauxhall or VW lump and get it to work? I need a rough guide price of what I would be looking at for such a conversion. thanks mate

yes it is, the 16v is around the 100bhp mark.
I hope you have a full wallet, or learn fast!
VW diesels have been done, but typically in the Vitara not the SJ, they're a bit small.

If you had to give a rough estimate, what would I be looking to pay, if I sourced my own engine etc. I have my eye on an SJ410, absoluteley love the shape, but its the mechanical worries that are holding me back from purchasing. From what I hear, the 978cc are very underpowered (45bhp) but apparently revvy, which I think i could live with. I'll only be driving around town really. Its when that engine goes wrong that worries me, I don't wish to shed out money for such a useless motor, id rather pay more and put something decent in... so I'm tryna get as much info as poss.

hadn't come across those before. Had a research, and I can see what you mean. They look very similar - but not quite as good as the zuki they seem to sit a bit lower naturally though

I used to have one of these bad boys. Great little off roader. From memory, I think a Vauxhall 1700 diesel is an option too. But Mine was a 1.3 and went fine. Maybe look for a 1.3 Suzuki engine ? I wouldn't want to go too fast in one anyway, they aint that safe TBH !!!! Here's my old one. LOL, I used to tell the kids it was a Transformer and it went off in the night to fight crime !! I really needed to get a grip !!
