Ok exhaust update time. So as mentioned last time, the pattern rear exhaust silencer just wouldn't fit the mid section. There were two problems. First being the sleeve was 4mm larger than the mid section. Secondly it was about 30mm too short. So I bought a new sleeve piece with the correct internal diameter of 48mm and also much longer. So then it was time to mark it up and cut the wrong offending end off. I also cut down the new sleeve to the right size required. Compared to the old piece you can see the difference in length and width. Old piece. New piece. Then it was off to my good friend with his welder. After a little while it was happily TIG welded onto the silencer. Then it was a simple matter of treating it to the same paint and protection as the rest of the silencer. I had good news today as well that my springs should be arriving tomorrow. More updates to come hopefully.

New update time. So a box arrived and in it were these lovely brand new springs. I can't recommend South Yorkshire Springs enough. After much searching for some springs, I spoke to Tony the owner and what a great guy and very reasonably priced. Here's his handy work. Then it was time for fitting, first job was to remove the shock absorber and disconnect the driveshaft. However this threw up one of my first problems. The CV grease in the driveshaft was extremely crusty and I just couldn't refit it without replacing the grease. So off it came. Dirty grease that as you can see has begun to harden which is not good. Then it was just a matter of taking the spring out and refitting the new one. As you can see there is a significant size difference from new to old. I then had a good look at the shock absorbers. They were working extremely well with no leaks etc. They just looked a bit grubby as you can see. However, with some soapy water and a soft sponge they came up really clean and gave me a pleasant surprise. On closer inspection of the part number these are the original shocks from factory. The 82 part number signifies year of construction. They cleaned up a real treat and also it's more evidence of the genuine mileage. Then it was just a matter of refitting it all back on to the car and giving it a good looking over and a clean. Hope you like, I'll tackle the fronts within the next couple of weeks.

Very nice project indeed Be careful changing the front coil springs though, as they are bloody long and a swine to just get out without a spring compressor Hopefully the faded red paint will just polish out, always amazes me how faded it goes yet buffs up a treat

love all the work on the car so far OEM+ trying to think up something exotic or unusual to explain those slices in the bumper plastics. all i could think of was bonnet catch was broken for years and someone had lashed it with bailer twine (tenuous)

That's a brilliant find! Love what you're doing to it - original with a twist. Nice work.

Thank you all so much for your responses to this project. To get so much approval is really motivating, it's great to know that my ideas are coming across to you all. I really can't wait to get the car closer to completion. The only downside is it's more likely to be completed at the end of Summer! Means I won't be able to enjoy it till next Spring. Anyway, here's an update for you. Remember that crusty old CV grease in the driveshaft that had started to solidify? Well here's how it looks after a good clean in the chemical tank. Ready for some nice fresh grease. I think it looks almost brand new again! Also as you're well aware the paint is really faded in places. I thought I'd just experiment with the paint work and some good old fashioned elbow grease. This is the result of about 15mins effort. As you can see it's come up really nice. The process was; - Polish with Meguiars Scratch X as it's a light cutting compound. - Polish with Auto-Finesse polish to soak some life back in to the paint. - Finally it was rub some Dodo juice banana wax in by finger tip to try and seal in the polish. It came up quite nicely, it's also stayed that way as well. I'm not sure what it would be like after it's been out in the open elements, it may return back to it's faded state. Hopefully it won't but we shall see. I'm thinking it probably needs cutting properly with an orbital of some description.

Lovely looking car, i do like the base spec models and a lot more headroom with no sunroof! Years ago i had a 2.8 ex motorway patrol car that was based on an L spec saloon. That dash and interior brings back a lot of memory's, although the speedo was different and the interior blue. I love your plans for it and i bet that paintwork will buff up really well

So as you can see from my previous posts I was halfway through fitting my lowering springs. The fronts were easier to do than the fronts on the MK1 Cavalier. Every nut came off easily which was a great help. There was also a problem with the tie bar bushes as you can see here. There was nothing left of them! However I managed to get these to replace them. These shouldn't rot away like the others! Got the front springs in and also washed the front shock absorbers like the rear. Hopefully tomorrow I'll clean up the tie bars and fit the new bushes on.

Another update, Ok so another update today, spent a good few hours working on it today. Fitted the Superpro bushes on to the tie bars. I'm going to need to do the tracking but I have set it roughly up. The Superpro bushes are really good quality. I also got my rocker cover back from the painters. It was sandblasted then painted back to gloss black like original. Then it was just a matter of putting it back on to the cylinder head with a nice new cork gasket. I also did a few other little jobs that needed doing such as fit the new exhaust clamp, new rotor arm and distributor cap, refitted the ignition leads (I'll get new ones at some point) I gave it a quick test run before I do the cambelt.

Another update on this old girl, So it was time to fit the new cambelt as I don't know when it last had one, having now replaced it I don't think it's had one for a long time. All timed up and marked and the old cambelt removed. New vs Old with the cambelt tensioner side by side. The bearing on the older one was starting to feel a little rough. New belt on and tensioned up, it even still has the original Ford spring for the tensioner. Should be good for another long period of time. I found the original timing belt cover in the boot. I test fitted it back on to the car. However age hasn't been kind and it needs a new coat of paint. I love the original look of it but it needs a new coat of black. I then decided to remove the windscreen washer bottle. The fluid inside it was almost brown. I think it was possibly the source of the current Ebola virus. So off it came for a drain and a clean. Let's hope it can get it looking cleaner. However, once removed from the car it left a mess on the inner wing. A quick wipe over with a soapy sponge and a quick polish. It's looking a lot better. It was then time to drop it back down on to its wheels to see how low it looks on its new springs.

So I got the car out of the garage today to do a bit more work on her. First of all, remember that grotty old health hazard that was my windscreen washer bottle? Well here it is after being left full of bleach to soak. I think it's come up much better now. Then it was just a matter of putting it back on the car and filling up with some nice clean fluid. What a lovely shade of blue. I'll be replacing the supply pipe with some nice new clear pipe when I next go to SFS. Ok so here it is out of the garage and on the floor. I have got to be honest I was hoping it would be about an inch lower, however it may settle a bit. It's only moved it's own length since having them fitted. I'm hoping it will look better when I get the wheels banded. Going 2" on the rear and 1.5" on the front. Time to turn my attention to the rear now. I decided to remove the rear bumper as it needed the boiled linseed oil treatment but also I would like to check and clean the bodywork underneath. Also I'm really liking the look of the new exhaust on the car. I'm glad I painted it silver as I think it makes the look. The rear valance is in really good condition as well. Really pleased with what it was like behind the bumper. Thank you all for looking and thank you for your comments.
