I've got a brake master cylinder that's in need of a rebuild, but I can't find kits for it anywhere. It's from a 1978 Honda Acty van, and parts are very hard to come by. Are the parts in a rebuild kit pretty generic, and can I just find out what size O ring or circlip or whatever I need and order the individual bits? Or is there a rebuild service I can send the unit off to and they can do a customer refurb? Any ideas?
Thanks in advance

You could carefully pull it apart, NOT damaging the original seals, then take rough measurements and compare to more readily available re-build/seal kits. Old rubber parts do tend to change shape over time, and are usually a specifically molded shape rather than a generic o-ring type seal.

Yeah I think so, I paid about the same for mine to be rebuilt, They don't just fit new seals, they mill out the inside of the old one and sleave it with stainless, so more work than you might think.

What is the MC? Single or dual circuit. If single of the common Girling built-in reservoir - they are readily available. Single with remote reservoir like Landrover Series likewise. I'm just redoing the dual circuit on my Rickman and switching to single circuit. I think single circuit MCs last longer but that's my view which probably isn't shared. As for safety kunifer piping is a must rather than copper... and costs little more.
New seals rarely last long and if the bore is worn with several years use not worth considering.

Dual circuit with built in reservoir. If there is something that would be an easy swap then I'd be up for it, but money time and skill are against me on that note as I want to get it to RRG and spend around £1.34 on fixng the fekker What's kunifer piping and why is it better than copper?

Seriously, just doing the seals will be a complete waste of time, been there done it, it will be p*****g out fluid in no time at all. Are there no J car specialists out there? On one of my previous Scimitars I needed to renew my MC, found the "correct" part was stupidly expensive and ended up at Rimmer Bros who dug about and found an almost identical one ( Land Rover series 3 I think) for nothing like the money I would have had to pay. I cannot believe your MC is unique to your acty, its got to be generic to other makes. Good luck. PS: Why not put a pic up of it on here, plenty of clever sods about, may be able to tell you what its very similar too.

What's kunifer piping and why is it better than copper? For your brake lines you've got three choices, steel, copper or kunifer. Steel rust, copper work hardens and you run the risk of it splitting and kunifer takes away both of those down-sides. Copper is also illegal to use in some places but I think in this country you just need to use more clips/supports? I've happily used it for my fuel pipes. Splitting will help me stop in that case!
