My welder has just packed up. It was a cheap one even when new and I got it second hand. The wire feed has started pulsing and adjusting makes no difference. So I need a new one.
Should I go for an inverter welder? The prices have dropped considerably since I last looked. Or should I look for a proper industrial one, second hand? There is one local which goes down to 40amps and 0.8mm wire. Is this too big and will it blow holes in car bodies?
I am in Germany but the car I am doing major surgery on is an MGB GT 1976.

Most mig welders go down to 30 amps whic is needed for cars , some even to 25 . It sounds like it might be a bit fierce . I wouldnt know what welder to get Germany , I'm sure you have some great German made ones to chose from , lorch , ewm , fronius [Austrian].

I've got an ESAB Caddy C160i and it's absolutely brilliant for car restoration work - you can turn it right down and weld up pinholes in 20g steel without using a backing strip and it'll go up to 6mm for jigs and heavy stuff. It was expensive, but it's worlds apart from the usual hobby mig.

I've bought so much cheap tat in my youth and thrown it away, or spent hours repairing it, that I'd rather get something decent nowadays. Was it Henry Royce who said 'the quality remains long after the price is forgotten'?

Great , it would be good to see the results and compare them and the price of the machine to what we have over here.
