So, after a successful MOT on Saturday .....my clutch is slipping ...it seems a bit intermittent but it's there and needs to sorted ...beyond me as a long time aircooled VW owner where it's a simple drop the engine, clutch fitted, back in, done! So the question is...is it likely to be a stretched cable that can be adjusted out? (Which will be my 1st port of call) and the next question is what is the going rate for a clutch swap on a 924 assuming I supply the kit Many thanks for any advice

It could be a sticky cable but I doubt it has stretched since in theory your biting point would become lower. As for the parts, I would be tempted to let the garage source the clutch. Not only because they will know what works for them (A Transmech clutch I fitted to an Espace (£50) was like a switch with it being heavier than a racing clutch!), but because if anything fails you can fall back on them for the labour as opposed to supplying the part and dealing with this yourself. I say this since if the 924 is like a 944 a clutch change is not a simple or cheap job. IIRC it involves dropping the rear subframe and suspension assembly (which can either be fairly simple (but tedious) or an absolute pain (the bolts at the front of the subframe can seize in, requiring creative ways to remove them). After this you then remove the gearbox (at the back of the car) along with torque tube and bellhousing. There is a chance that you may get away with removing the suspension, and then simply sliding the gearbox and torque tube assembly backwards in situ, but you would need to speak to some 924 peeps regarding this (or Gavin; Sumpcracker on here who may be able to sort you out if you don't mind the drive down). As you can tell, the above makes it not so cheap. I know that on a 944 S2 the going rate is anywhere between £800-1100 (with £500 of that being the clutch assembly). On a 924 I believe a Sachs clutch is around £175 from Car Parts 4 Less. Here is a link I found earlier: www.924.org/techsection/ClutchReplacement.htm

Beetles are one of the few cars where the engine can be removed in minutes I agree.
