Lol, you had me worried for a while until I scrolled down! I think the gaffer tape was a Ford optional extra, hopefully one I will never need!

Was every Mk1 Mondeo sold with a roll of gaffa tape in the boot just in case...?!?!?!
That Mondeo of yours is mintier that a packet of Polos...!!! What a gem and hard to believe it's nearly a twenty year old motor...!!!!!!!!!
A gentle lower and some choice alloys will have that looking beautiful sir...

40k genuine miles, service history too!
Like you say, I'll choose some tasteful genuine Ford alloys and lower slightly as I may want to tow in the future.
I think colour coding the mirrors may be a nice subtle touch too.

Well the plan was always to get a set of tasteful alloys, I'm very fond of the Ford 7 spoke 17" alloys but they're going to cost nearly what the car cost. I bought these from Ebay earlier this week for a bargain £20! So I got to work cleaning them up... Hopefully I'll fit them this weekend.

Those alloys will look superb sir, great choice and what a bargain!!!
I find that to clean alloy wheels thoroughly some lime and grime Cillit Bang is good to spray on and leave for a few moments before frothing up with a washing up brush or such like! Then get some hot soapy water and use another washing up brush to scrub of the crud...!!!
I cannot wait to see the pictures of these rims on that stunning Mondeo of yours...

Cheers grifterkid, I used some cheap oven cleaner, washed it off, then waxed the wheels.

Well I've put the new wheels on the one side and if I'm honest they haven't given me the wow factor. May be they'll look better once it's lowered, I also plan to debadge, colour code the door strips, wing mirrors, and door handles but I'd really value your opinions. I've also learnt that I need longer wheel nuts to fit the alloys so a worth while exercise.

That's a lovely example of an early Mondeo. The wheels whilst a billy bargain and in very good condition IMO don't really suit the car. The soft and rounded lines of the Mondeo are somewhat at odds with the sharp and edgy looking wheels. Personally I wouldn't colour code too much, the silver contrasts well with the black trim. Please don't take any offence, it's only my opinion! It's a lovely car, good luck with it.
Cheers, Rich.

I think a touch of the lows is all this car needs now...
Whilst not blowing me away the alloy wheels are a worthwhile and subtle addition and look very good indeed.
With regards to the black trim, personally I would leave it as it is as those little contrasts help to break up the shape of the car and give it a bit of life rather than it just being a silver mass...!
If you were to change the wheels I'd look for something that was available on early Mondeo's so as to fit in with the design aesthetic of the car...
Having said that it is your car so you may think "f&*k it" and do whatever tickles you pickle and that's fine by me...!!!
Enjoying it is the main thing so just do what puts a smile on your face sir...

There is a reasonable dilemma when you own a car as clean as this. You have to be ever so careful when you modify it because it could destroy its purity and, possibly, make a return to its "as new " condition virtually impossible. If you leave it standard and bring it up to concours condition, you could be looking at only a handful of MK1 Mondeos in that kind of condition in the whole country within a few years. Personally, Id lower the life out of it over the standard wheel trims, colour code the life out of it and polish it to death. Subtle, seriously clean and it will retain the essence of a damn near mint and rare MK1.

Very very nice car. The wheels to me look too factory.....but that's my opinion! There used to be a mk1 v6 ghia around here, stock with a subtle drop and escort cosworth rims-looked the pit bulls plums but they are horrendously expensive. Later fiesta alloys of all styles (not Harry) seem to appear cheaply on that there ebay.....just sayin lol

I then wanted to start cleaning the interior as it stinks of wood (the material not the smell of a boner) best quote ever!

Some very sound and genuine comments, don't worry no offence taken. I think the main problem here is that I don't know what I want to achieve. I chose the Mondeo as it wasn't an obvious retro ride to most and the fact they are so reliable, cheap to run and surely most of the mk1's we're killed by the 'scrappage' schemes. The car needs to be a practical family ride that looks smart and can tow the caravan so I can't drop it too much and I don't want to get sucked into modding it to death like I did with my Manta years ago, in the end the car owned me rather than me owning the car! I think the alloys I bought suit the mk2 better, so I think I'll put the back up for sale. Original alloys, a slight drop and an investment in a referb might give me a subtle modded/ original look. These are a few ideas I've found, the Zetec alloys look good on the blue one, glad I didn't buy ST200 alloys! Nah... Gowing on me... After seeing the blu one, I have to agree with you on the ST200 alloys. It also looks like the Mondeo could use some spacers/ lower offsets at the back. Maybe this is useful as inspiration?
