So, now my idea of a well fettled 900 turbo has been smashed due to apparent week gearboxes, I'm now racking my brains for something else instead.
Doesn't need to be anything flash, in fact the uglier the better, but needs to be hugely over engineered so no preferably no internal changes!
I'm after somewhere in the region of 300-400bhp, not to fussed on which wheels receive the power!
Ben.

400 through the front! think you need arms of a strongman and some adult pampers driven a rs focus in anger and that's hard and its only about half your total there again you might have bigger balls than me

Have to say, what your asking for is very vague. It would help if we knew what you wanted to achieve (other than 400bhp), it would help. I.e: Are you planning to use it for tracking/daily/drags/drifting? : What's your budget? How mechanically minded are you? How far off your magic 400 do you mind starting?
If you ask yourself those sorts of questions it quite quickly narrows down your options.

Confused. You wanted a 900 Turbo to fettle, but the gearbox has put you off. Why not just get a 900 Turbo and factor a stronger gearbox into your mods?

The issue with the 900 is that the gearbox is situated into the sump from what I can gather, meaning no real upgrade as such without spending vast amounts on stronger gears etc. See my other thread on the 900's, someone explained it pretty well.
I know it's a vague question, and in all honesty there's no real answer, it's more of a "because why not" sort of thing. I'm a fabricator by trade so any welding isn't an issue, I'm also mechanically minded due to doing my three years at college.

For me the Volvos aren't that unassuming (although RWD would be a bonus and I'm sure this thread is going to decide that you should get one). Saabs are an excellent choice, but again it's no secret that they're fast. For me I'd be trying to find something more er sleeperey. For example, the Fiat Marea came in 5cyl turbo flavour - or you could put the boosted 5pot fiat coupe front end in a Multipla?
Just me then? I'll get my coat.

If you're a fabricator, then why not just get a drive chain that's already at the point you want to get to and build a car around that? That way you can build exactly to your requirements.

The blandest car I can imagine, would be a Mitsubishi Charisma with Lancer EVOII running gear.
Maybe, a Renault Laguna I with a F4RT from a Megane?
How about a Toyota Carina E with somekind of hot Celica Turbo peppers under the bonnet?
Or a MB 190E with a 500 v8 from a donor S-class.
Why not a Nissan Serena with SR20DET thrown in it?

I drove a ~480bhp Fiat Coupe Turbo a couple of days ago. Get one, I'm not usually phased by fast cars but that was bum clenchingly awesome.
