Just got back from Gurston Down Hillclimb and had a great day. The think I love about hillclimbs and sprints is the varied types of cars that you get and the engineering that goes into some of the cars, everything from a Saab 93 to pumped up single seaters. Some of the cars were doing more than 150mph over the finish line, on a single track road. Anyway less of the talking and more pictures. Quite a few minis, all A series but with different heads, transmissions etc. Renault 21 Turbo MK1 Golf Mitsubishi Evo 6 MK2 MX5 which I believe is for sale (never raced or rallied!) The top contenders in the British Hillclimb Championship. the photos don't do them justice, the speed the cars carry through some of the tight corners is just breath taking, with little or no run off. Most of these cars are V6/V8, flat shifting, sequential gearboxed, bewinged monsters. At all events there will be standout cars and for me the following 3 cars represented why hillclimbing engineering is exciting. Firstly is Nick Manns 'Manic Beattie' this car has to be heard to be believed. If you haven't read about this car before then there is further information here: raceenginedesign.biz/Manic-Beattie.htmAs this car approaches the startline all you can hear is the sound of a Turbine engine which is used to create constant boost pressure and also the exhaust gas is used to 'blow the rear diffuser', genius! Secondly is Keith Murrays Audi 80 1.4turbo. This car is brilliantly executed and is the holder of many class records. The third car is a 'silhouette' Skoda with a breathed upon Rover V8, I don't know much about this car but it looked and sounded fantastic.

Been going to hillclimbs since I was a kid and finally this year I've gotten into it myself. Great atmosphere, camaraderie and the sheer breadth of cars is awe inspiring. You can compete in literally anything. If my clapped out Nova can...well so can anyone! The Goulds, Pilbeams etc have to be seen to be believed. Ex-F1/Indycar V8s do power many of them.
One of the cheapest forms of motorsport.
Minis are an art form all on their own in speed events! There's one guy (Martin Depper) who along with his father have been campaigning a Mini that's got BMW motorcycle heads attached to the A-series block!
The ex-Will Gollop biturbo Metro 6R4 used to be a regular on the hills, frequently getting the better of its owner, Ken Sims and a spectacle to watch! Also, in the Nineties, there was an official Audi-built Pikes Peak replicza S1 quattro driven by the late Tom Hammonds....700bhp....5 cylinder howl.
Keith Murray used to compete in a Sport-converted Quattro (his firm Dialynx specialise in tuning Audis) that held many records and the car is still around in the hands of Mick Harriman. If you've never been I urge anyone to go to an event!
Nic Mann's Mannic is phenomenal. Only seen it in action once. He built it from scratch - he's always been slightly mental. He used to compete in his mother's old Morris Minor that had a turbocharged Rover V8........which is also still about (VBK473).

I used to be a regular up there in westfields and mallocks. Dad and bro still compete in a historic 500 at gurston and through out the country. Gotta be one of the most friendly forms of Motorsport out there tried to find some pics but unfortunately the internet doesn't go back that far for any of my cars lol (I was gurston hillclimb champion in 1993 iirc)

Smashing stuff! Given that Prescott, Shelsley Walsh, Loton Park and the sprint course at Curborough are all less than an hour from here I don't go nearly enough. Treasured memories of seeing Hannu Mikkola's Audi Sport Quattro running up Shelsley in 1985, though. RRG14 attendees who fancy something to do on the Saturday and are interested in seeing what the sport's all about would be advised to have a look here.

Its a great day out, the entry cost is low (£10 with kids under 15 free) and you are able to walk around the pits and talk to the drivers. I would recommend it to anyone who likes motorsport.

My dad lives near Gurston Down so I've few times and would agree with everything said. It's great value for some great cars going for it.
Did the hillclimb school there as well, again excellent day out and you get loads of runs.
