Overview
This is a trade sale of a 1989 Peugeot 205 1.6 GTI. This is a four owner car, in good, solid overall condition, with none of the typical rust issues often found on these little hot hatches. This is the ‘cross-over’ or ‘MK1.5’ model with the 1.9 engine’s cylinder head, outputting 115 bhp.
The detail of this car is as follows;
History
This 205 has had just four owners in total – two being from the same family (mother and son) and two being the same person. First registered on 1st September 1989, there’s a mix of historical documents in the file, including some but not all MOT’s, receipts for work but the original purchase receipt and document folder is present. It now has a little over 106,500 miles on the clock.
We purchased the car from the last owner – an engine builder for a well known racing team – who had looked after this car well in his 8 years of ownership. Overall this is a very solid 205 and drives really well, with no rust/rot issues, a very solid underside, running gear and engine gearbox and a tidy interior. The least strong part of the car is the exterior which has suffered a few scrapes and scratches but the car has not been in an accident (it is HPI clear) and has a straight chassis.
The car was MOT’d until the end of the year but we have just put another 12 months on it, expiring 17th September 2015. There were two advisories – one for the front discs being rusty on the back-sides and one for the drop links being worn. All of these have been replaced for new items so there are no issues with the car now and everything on it works.
There’s also tax on the car until the end of this year so if you purchase the car before the end of September you will benefit fully from this before the tax rules change.
Body
Overall the bodywork is solid. The Graphite Grey Metallic paintwork does polish up well and the car has not been welded, or require any. All of the typical 205 rust points such as sills, rear quarter window/roof crease, boot floor and under the rear seat are all solid.
However, as mentioned above there are some knocks and scrapes as expected. About half of the panels on the car have lots of fine scratching in the lacquer, there’s a scrape that’s been touched up on the front of the off-side wing, a very small depression above the near-side wheel arch, a key-scratch on the near-side rear quarter and marking to the roof. Finally, a stone chip on the leading edge of the bonnet has bubbled-up.
Don’t let this put you off however, we are simply trying to be open on the overall condition of the car – and it really is a solid little car.
Mechanical/Running gear
The engine and gearbox are tight and run well, with no unusual noises. The clutch was replaced at 39,000 miles and all of the belts were replaced at 83,000 miles. In the last few years the top mounts, track rod ends, gearbox and engine mounts have all been replaced.
There’s a receipt from four years ago when the rear beam was stripped, re-bushed and refurbished. The rear brakes were stripped and replaced last December along with the brake fluid.
Since acquiring the car, we have performed an oil and filter change, re-sealed the leaky sump with a new gasket, air filer change and replaced the distributer cap and rotor arm. All four tyres are new Continental winter tyres, riding on 1.9 GTI original alloys in Graphite Grey. The car is standard aside from a full Scorpion exhaust system which has a nice note to it without being boomy at high speeds.
The car now needs nothing other than regular servicing and enjoying driving it.
Interior
The interior is a great place to be and remains bright and fresh. The previous owner fitted half-leather, 1.9 GTI seats but otherwise it is original inside. All of the trim is in good condition and everything works. The car has the factory, sliding, glass sunroof fitted which does not leak. The rear quarter light window seals were replaced by the previous owner along with the boot seal.
There is a set of black carpet mats (not pictured) that come with the car and the sharp-eyed amongst you may notice the lack of a rear view mirror or handle for the glass sunroof. Both were broken when we took the car on and replacements should arrive in the next couple of days so will be fitted in time for the next owner.
The windows are electric and both work and the car was fitted with the optional power steering from new which makes for a nice, light feel whilst still being very responsive. A Blaupunkt face-off CD player is fitted.
Finally, the car has remote central locking with a Laserline Cat 1 alarm/immobiliser. Two keys and two fobs are present.
Summary
Overall this is a great little car and a wonderful throw-back to the late eighties hot-hatch era. It’s not concours on the outside, but not too shabby by any lengths and being such a strong car mechanically and structurally, should make a great long-term ownership prospect for the next lucky owner. This is one car that won’t fail to put a smile on your face.
