Did a lot of town driving yesterday, after an hour of stop start traffic I got stuck at a set of traffic lights lights. My car is an Auto, so I sat patiently with my foot on the brake waiting to go. after two minutes of sitting, I felt the brake pedal push my foot back. I continued on with my journey and everything seemed fine. As I slowed to enter my street, my usual push on the brake pedal to slow down resulted in a near emergency stop. Like the pressure required to stop was at an absolute minimum. What could cause this? A servo issue?
I called the local garage who did my MOT, after explaining it's a 1971 Humber Sceptre, suggested it was an ABS fault and I should take it back to my nearest dealer for examination...

I'm not familiar with a Humber Sceptre setup, however it sounds an awful lot like an issue I had on my Sierra which had the Teves electric servo assistance.

Yep - faulty ABS and Humber main agent job to repair Is it a remote servo or one attached to the brake pedal with master cylinder attached to the servo ? My money is on a servo fault. Whilst some can be repaired it's often easier to simply source a known good replacement. Have you checked the pipework from engine to servo isn't blocked / collapsed inside. Does the servo have a one way valve that could be sticking ? With car stationary and engine switched off normally the servo has enough vac to work a couple of pedal pushes before vac depleted. When that happens the brake pedal doesn't go down as far and gets harder to press. Do that and then start the car whilst still pressing down on the now hard pedal - it should then go down a little. These are some of the basic tests I use when checking a servo fault but are no means definitive.

Wow thanks! Yes air control valve gasket thingy perished! Didn't even know what one was until today. I'll order parts and fit it next weekend. Thanks for your help I think I'll check and service the whole system to be sure, especially now I know I can get the parts.
