Though I've tackled many automotive tasks, I've never actually changed a wheel bearing and my Saab ng900 needs one changed.
I'm ok with the stripping down the suspension but am bothered about getting the bearing out and the new one in. Various websites say you either do or don't need a press and are little help. As the good people of RR are a practical lot, I thought I'd seek your advice.
If I do need a press and anyone Bolton/Bury ish has the facilities to swap the bearing once the strut is off, in exchange for beer vouchers, please let me know.

Whether you need a press or not depends on the type of wheel bearing, and therefore the car it's going on. Tapered roller bearings, as found on the front of old rear-wheel-drive cars (and the rear of old front-wheel-drive cars) can be installed with simple hand tools. Cars which have independent suspension on the driven axle (front or rear) will usually have double-row ball bearings. Some are pressed directly into the knuckle, which need to be pressed out and the new ones pressed in. More modern cars will tend to have bearings which are sealed permanently into the hub, which therefore must be unbolted and replaced whole. These are the most expensive type to replace, but also the easiest by far. Based on a quick google, your Saab has the press-in double-row ball bearing type, so therefore you will require a press to change them.

most back street tyre places will have a press and swap it over for cheap if you take in the dismantled strut

You can do the press-in bearings in a big vice with various sized sockets and old bearing races. And knock out the old hub from the bearing with a big hammer.
All easier in a press of course.
