I decided it's time to get rid of the useless rubbish that has accumulated in my onboard toolbox. I'm not left with much, but I wondered what stuff people wouldn't leave home without. I always have a good stock of bicarbonate of soda and super glue. If you need an emergency repair that needs to be strong those two elements together are as strong as it can get. Either pack the space with bicarb then squirt the glue on, or coat with glue then blow bicarb on from a spoon. Its got me out of many roadside situations. Be wary though, its very easy to glue yourself to your car. My toolbox, after a purge... i.imgur.com/pLYl7ph.jpgDangit, I can't post a pic from my phone. Sorry.

I don't really carry much, I just have breakdown cover. Most of the time I'd rather get it dragged home and fix it on the drive than curse word around at the side of the road, but I always carry spare premixed coolant and a litre of oil.

May absolute essentials are cargo tape, cable ties, spannners and sockets, screw drivers, knife, torch, superglue and bicarb, wd40, oil, can of petrol, breakdown membership, fuses, spare belts, small statue of some religious bloke praying... Possibly Buddhist... I'm not a believer but the great thing about Buddhism is you don't have to believe in it for it to work.

Mine consists of whatever tools ive forgotten to take out of my pocket from work and cable ties. Never had to get a car recovered yet and they break down all the time. A piece of tree smashed into the aux belt tensioner on the Granada when it snapped was the last good one.

Which chemical metal do you use bortaf? Araldite Repair Bar 50g It's held an ally water pipe union onto the head in me P100 with it for the last 4 years Obv there are others out there but i get it with 25% off from where my son works and it's done jobs perfectly inc sealing a grazed/ground through alloy sump for a year, odd rad leaks (2 years before i finaly changed the rad ) and if you have a dececent release agent (like GT85 or similar) you can make nuts and bolts with it, well ok not bolts but half decent substitutes for emergency repairs that can be undone/reused

Every tool I own is in the back, it's a P38 for God's sake. Fortunately the new tyres are too big for the wheel well, so that is now the tool box.
The number one tool is the Nanocom and that lives in the glovebox to sort any electrical hissy fits out.
Full selection of spanners (open and combination) screwdrivers, pliers, hacksaw, two bottle jacks, two axle stands, oil, coolant, carb cleaner, WD40, glue, bulbs, 3/8 and 1/4 inch socket sets, bloody great breaker bar and wheel nut specific socket. Basically all sorts of curse word including, of course, cable ties!
Breakdown cover is a thing of wonder here with the Philippine AA seeming to make it impossible to actually join, and those I know that have managed it, only kept membership for one year as they never turned up when needed anyway.
Basically, I'd like the back of the RR to look like Chris' van, but Madam seems to insist that we can fit the kids in as well.

Nice one bortaf. Must get some. I've had a bar of plumbers putty knocking around my toolbox for a while but its probably gone off by now. Used it to plug a radiator outlet leak one winter and never actually did replace that, its still on there with the new owner. This is a really useful thread in my opinion. Its really good to know what others carry with them. I'll know which one of you to call when I break down.

Good thread idea. Leatherman, torch, cable ties, tea bags, milk, sugar. Maybe a folding chair and some fags. And always bring PLENTY OF WIN.

Oh yes... leatherman: Check (mine is my wife's. She often wonders what became of it). Folding chair though... Genius. This has been missing from my roadside life. Thanks!

PS there was a Pinto station wagon very similar to in style to that one up there, for sale on C&C for many months earlier this year. I was very tempted but it looked like it needed some intensive care so I passed by)
