Couple of days ago broke down with my Alfa: First I noticed, the lights were gone then came back. Pulled in a bus stop and suddenly heard some cracking noise... stopped the engine, then restarted it: noticed that, when I put the ignition on it, the light on the dashboard do not appear, but the starter start turning, then, when the engine is running, the cracking noise starts again (sounds like the starter would jumps in again), and; the lights are flashing... Anybody?

I had problem with starter running by itself on a Peugeot. Turned out to be a faulty ignition switch. Double check the multiplug connector is firmly pushed together before anything else.

The ignition switch was broken (if I turned the key on, not any control lights came up, but the starter jumped in), but the problem still existed after a new one was installed... An Alfa technician found the problem at last; two wires behind the dashboard...6 hours, to fix it, his hands lookd terrible, I really felt sorry for him..
