4 x Swedish branded tyres, all on 7mm tread
Unused toolkit and spare wheel
I was on the lookout for a new daily driver after my 5 series failed its MOT and the usual classified and eBay trawling left me looking for something I’ve not had before. I always fancied an old Saab and I’d almost discounted these, as all of the examples I’d seen had starship miles, worn out gearboxes and serious rust issues. This one was over my budget but stuck out as looking like a car that had been looked after with low miles and clean bodywork. These ‘flat front’ cars are the last of the proper pre-GM cars, before they started using bits of Cavalier and retaining all of the Saab quirky features, including a handbrake that operates the front wheels.
This car is by far the most honest genuine car I've owned, the history is fantastic. On 1st August 1986 Mrs Pownall picked up this car from Mayfield Garage, Liverpool, trading in her previous car which was a Saab 99. She then had the car serviced at Saab main dealers ever since and these are all documented in the history file. The last recorded service when I bought it was in July 1999 and I can only presume she gave up driving, because it had travelled less than 4000 miles since. It has been MOT’d every year and had only covered 17 miles between it’s last two MOTs. It flew through in August with no advisories whatsoever, but caught the MOT tester out with the handbrake! I fully serviced the car when I got it to be on the safe side, although the oil looked brand new when I dropped it.
I’ve been using the car every day since then, covering over 1000 miles in the last 2 months. The car drives how you would expect a 45,000-mile car to drive, it drives perfectly and quietly around town and on the motorway and I’ve been as far as Birmingham and back in it with zero fuss whatsoever. The controls are light and responsive and the car is great fun to drive.
Condition wise I think the photos speak volumes, but here is a summary:
Exterior:
Excellent condition, no rust whatsoever, anywhere. Finished in Saab Admiral Blue, the paint is in great condition The only blemishes to speak of are a handful of small stone chips on the bonnet and a couple of very small trolley dings in the passenger door. These haven’t broken the paint and would be an inexpensive easy fix for a dent specialist. The car has been waxoyled from new, underneath and in the inner wings so there are no signs of corrosion or repairs. It even still wears its original dealer plates.
Interior:
As per the outside, the interior is in excellent shape, no damage or marks to the seats or carpets. The dash is clean and crack free, showing no signs of wear to the switches or controls. The boot is spotless, the spare wheel and tools are unused. The only criticism is that headlining cloth is starting to sag very slightly in the corners. Kits to repair these can be bought cheaply and it’s a DIY job for someone with some patience. The car is pretty basic in terms of equipment, the windows are all manual, the car has never had a radio or speakers fitted. Everything that is there works perfectly, including the heated driver’s seat, which automatically comes on when the ambient temperature drops below 10 degrees.

So what's the reason I'm selling? The car is too nice. My kids clamber all over the inside of cars on the school run and such and my job means I'll pile miles on it and not have time to look after it.
