Hi all. I'm new to this thread and not really a petrolhead whatsoever.
I have a H reg VW Polo with under 80k genuine miles on the clock. Just recently had a water disappearing from the expansion tank and low and behold soon after a creamy coloured looking oil! Oh dear, looks like the head gasket. I've been quoted at least £400 for repairs but as you are probably aware the car isn't even worth that much. Is this a realistic quote?

Yes. As far as jobs go, it's not a small one. Although your polo is easy to work on, there is still a few hours labour and a gasket kit as well as pressure checking and skimming as the engine is question is very prone to leaking oil from the head gasket on the timing belt end front corner. Does the car hold and sentimental value? Because you are potentially right in assuming the repair is almost financially unviable but what will you look to replace the car with should you decide to sell or scrap the polo? At least £400 into this car gets your a car with a new head gasket and a proven track record so far. £400 on an unknown banger is far more a risky investment. So there you go.

yeah its not far off
as far as head gaskets go its not a hard one to do , if you have some tools you diy in a day or weekend , the parts are probably around £50

I'd just like to point out that I paid not much more than that for a 1.4 16v engine on R1 bike carbs complete with all of the bits to do the conversion on my Mk2. Just saying

It's not too bad to change a head gasket on a polo, if you decide to do it yourself make sure you have an m10(?) splined bit for the head bolts.

HG went on the g/f's polo a few months ago, got an engine and box locally for £25, couple of evenings after work, lump swapped. then stripped bits off the old lump and sold 'em on, winner.

Thanks for all the replies guys.
No it doesn't have sentimental value but it has been good to drive. I'm not mechanically minded in the slightest so me attempting it without the right gear or the right facilities is probably a non-starter.
