It may be different but an E34 will also be heavier. It is something more and more people are saying about the E36 these days oddly enough (that they are meant to be a better steer than the E46 which replaced it (bar the M cars of course); due to the E46 gaining a fair few pounds through the transition (underneath the E36 and E46 are very similar cars)). I went from an E36 328 Tourer to a E46 323 coupe (with std sport suspension) the E36 was a better drivers car than the E46, felt much more responsive particularly the steering. I also thought the Tourer was better cross county than a Z3 2.8 convertible. E36 328s are great cars, if I hadn't gone down the MX5 route I would have looked for one as a track day car.

e34 isnt that heavy, my diseasel is within 50kg or so of an e36 m3... quite solid things though, so not sure itll be easy to drop weight, but v8... And to a normal SE spec E36 I am sure I saw a 100kg+ difference between a 525i and a 325i, both in saloon flavour, with the diesel being more like 150kg heavier. I am sure an E34 M5 weighs quite a chunk more than an E36 M3 (in terms of Series 1 E34 vs an S1 E36, and an S2 and so on). I shall admit that they are not a bad steer though .

a 2.8 m52 engine in a compact is a fast combination. With all the talk about the compact, something to bear in mind is that the 318ti Compact is 1215Kg and the 328 4 door is 1395Kg, by the time you put a bigger 6cyl engine in the compact it's not going to be much lighter, but still have the compromised rear suspension. I'm not saying a compact wouldn't be a bad choice but a regular E36 would probably make a better handling track car. (weights from here www.auto-data.net/en/?f=showSubModel&modeli_id=953#3er%20Compact%20%28E36%29)

The heaviest E36 Compact is 1290kg, which is more than likely the 323ti (yes they did make them & no we didnt get them lol) So thats 100kg saving, seats weigh in at 28kg each! this I know as I weighed mine after nearly breaking my back. I would think you could get a compact down to 1200kg without to much hard work.
I would be tempted to Build a E46 330i Saloon with M3 suspension/diff & added lightness

Thanks for all the info gents. I'm taking it all on board. If I'm in a position to go car shopping in the new year I'll be looking for a 325 or 328. It will definitely be a coupe. Not a fan of the compact really. It looks wrong proportionally and it's got the dated rear end. It has the weak points of the E30 without the iconic looks.

Not E21. I still think for NA and not ££££ turbo, E30 is the better shell as the M60/M62 V8 go in. I have a E30 M30 3.5 and can't imagine how brutal a V8 would be, to the point I think it's pointless fitting a V8.

at that price surely you would be looking at a dog of a car, most good e36 m3's are around 6k and up

Because I want a blank canvas of a car that I can mess around with. An M3 is an M3. I want a long term project with the idea of it becoming a turbocharged, slick tyred, track weapon.

Before I bought my S1, an E36 M3 was a contender until I saw a few. Cheap ones are cheap for a reason, and pricey ones are the truly cheap cars if that makes any sense. Having an M badge means M priced parts, and a cheap M3 can soon become a road of ruin. I made the same mistake with my first 944 S2 if I am honest, only to see others continuing to make it. My 944 Turbo was pricier by quite a way but even with 4,000 more miles put onto it it still owed me less than the S2!). However, I am tempted to try an M of sorts in the future . Bang per buck, a 328i would be my choice :0.

Just leave this here, OH and turn up the volume......... WHAT THE FUUUUUUUUUUUU!!! That is utterly mental...and exactly what I want! What a racket. Might see me getting kicked out of track days though. I can always satisfy myself on the way home by melting peoples front bumpers at the lights.

I think you have made a good choice, but look for an early 325, nice strong engine, not the weaker alloy blocked 328's. From experience the reason my 328 coupe hasn't moved on 4 yrs is due to nikasil bore wear on one cylinder. The thing is I knew about their problems and still bought it anyway.

That ant-lag is off the scale!
I was expecting the engine internals to fly out the exhaust with that noise.
Another idea is to look for an Alpina build E36. They use the iron block for their bigger sixes and their value can be low. In the E46 they did a 3.3 280hp and 3.4 with 300hp get one from a scrap car and you have a nice engine to breath on.

All I know is , a 2.8 compact will sit on a m3's rear without much issue.

This place is dangerous. Happened at the weekend. E36 318iS. Stiff steering, ABS and the other thingy lights are on. Needs a UJ, I suspect a leaking PAS line too. £200.00 Already looking at what's involved in the m52b28 with m50 manifold conversion.
