I need a big barge in my life

with a great slice of luck my old boss called me a few weeks back and offered me my job back, to cut a long story short I left last December after being tapped up by a rival firm, I hated the job but left my old job on great terms, well I'm back on a good salary and working a mile from home!!.... So I now want another big old car to waft about in I will keep my c class but don't want another w210 e class I wasn't impressed with the last one.... So JAGUARS , tell me your opinions I fancy a xj model what's the best one to buy?? Seen a few s types for around £1800 but not sure on these? Fancy a xj sport is the 4.0 litre the one to have? Looking to buy after Xmas budget 1200 to 1800ish

Mine cost £1300 and has been great, its big, fast, comfortable, rare, handles vaguely well for a car of its size, I love it

X300's are more plentiful and cheaper and many would argue are a better buy than an XJ40 due to being essentially a development of the 40

X308's are available too, the V8 is a little less robust than the 6 but is still a good engine with better power

XJR's are available and if I was choosing again, I'd be very tempted by one, an X308 XJR with a 370bhp supercharged V8 sounds like a great laugh

The S types are nice and sound good but if you're gonna do a big Jag, do it properly The 4 litre 6 in mine is a lovely engine, smooth and quiet then very powerful when you stick it in 'sport' mode and floor it the engine just keeps pulling strongly to the redline and rather illegal speeds are quite attainable ( I imagine.. )




Edit: OK yes they're not great on fuel round town but that should really go without saying.. However, parts prices have been surprisingly reasonable A couple bits have been hard to find as my '40 is a late model which had a couple of unique parts but on the whole, bits have been easy to come by, and the car itself is pretty easy to work on (although I am trying to psych myself up for a starter motor change.. )

Cheers If you are looking at XJ40's then the later ones don't have the troublesome digital dash of the early ones and the 93-94 cars use modern air con gas which makes getting the system to work a bit easier

I think the 4.0 S is quite a good one to go for from what ive heard, mine is a Sovereign which has a nice spec and the square headlights which I prefer. Though I do find the suspension on the Sovereign a bit on the soft side

If it was me looking right now, I'd be very tempted to find an XJR when they occasionally pop up like this lovely looking thing

Check carefully for hidden rust. Rear suspension mounts common problem area on what can otherwise look an immaculate car on the surface. On my XJ40 the inner wings were starting to rot. Loved my 1976 SII XJ6 but expect they will be way out of your budget unless a project. I fancy an early XJS but prices are starting to rise. S Type would be my choice if I was in market today as they seem amazing value for money. Mate has a diesel he bought new and reckons fraction under 40 mpg average possible but suspect you'd not really be interested in economy so what about a S type V8 ?

Get a Lexus LS400. Best barge you can buy. You get silky smooth gear change. Drives like you on air. Put your foot down and they shift. If you haven't drove one then you must drive one. They are also very reliable and pretty economical for a 4.0 litre.

BMW E38 4.4 V8 Auto SWB Black on Black (cosmos black with black leather) 113K miles (from memory) 1998 facelift so 99 MY on an S plate when I take of my reg.

I would not be selling at all but a friend is selling his slightly newer A8 when his new car is built and delivered and the A8 was on my shortlist when I bought the E38 in 2006 but every one I looked at didn't meet my stds.

I would buy that above, have had jags and a E38 3.5 v8 and I would have the BMW again over a Jag unless the jag is a real minter. Do love them both though

Jags are high on my list as well, keep looking at a silver X300 3.2 Sport near me at £700, so tempting but the complexity scares me away

My car is very similar to the X300 under the skin and to be honest its pretty simple for a big old barge, especially compared to the LS and 7 series (which are both great cars in their own right )
