A 98 will be the Rover T series engine which from what I could find (after reading up on them as a potential engine for my MG) are a pretty solid, reliable engine. The tend to leak oil from the cam covers from memory? And there are a few tuning options out there for them I think the RoverTech forum has a fair bit on the engines and there is a guy on here who has a very nice looking 820 that hes track prepping I believe retrorides.proboards.com/thread/123593/1994-rover-820I don't know much else other than they look pretty cool, especially the 2 door coupes!

A friend of mine had one of these. Front balljoints have a tendancy to fall apart, worth checking! His was lovely, a two door turbo coupe. Extremely underated cars, and soooo comfy!

Hold out for a Vitesse or a Sterling IMO.
I loved my Vitesse 200bhp through the front wheels was interesting in the wet in such a vast heavy car.
They do rust, the dash boards lift, the engine though is a cracker.

As above really, its the same as any car, just get as low a mileage as possible with recent MOT, check for warning lights, rattles and tell tale noises and general condition, there arent many good ones left and quite rare on the roads now. They do tend to leak oil a bit but that helps to preserve the floorpan, the T series is a tough old engine and economy is ok. They do not suffer ball joint failures any more or less than other cars, same as anything, drive with a knock or worn parts and they will fail, the car is a Honda Legend underneath. Later models can rust on the arches. Let us know a bit about it and get some pictures if you can.

collected yesterday good 30 mile run temp stayed below half on guage no warning lights / auto goes up down / brakes good / body work good slight rust patch on rear arch otherwise good no visible oil leaks / no mayo under oil cap / exhaust quiet but have retro plans for that after xmas had to put tiny brackets to hold rear bumper in position and got to spray small blemish on front bumper but pocket money price for car so not complaining interior very good got pictures just need to sort out loading them

Always wanted an 800 fastback. I had the N/A T series in a rover 420 and it was amazing. Very torquey and great power delivery in that size of car. Plus it was top of the range and cost £200....
Man I love rovers...

so far so good got to replace expansion tank as it is cracked but repaired it with araldite on temp basis sourced identical but stronger expansion tank from a 1994 940 volvo info courtesy Rover 800 forum which means i use my expansion cap and just a step adaptor for one pipe / fairly easy job T series quite a poky engine / not too bad on mpg 26 in town maybe 36 on run cos its a big motor want to fit a better rear exhaust box a tad too quiet the one thats on it but other than that a good underatted car as stated
