hi, first off, its a 1.9tdi avf 6spd 54plate passat estate with 145k on it
the problem I'm having is every day after setting off to work my engine cuts out after 5 mins of driving, in pretty much the same spot at the first of 2 sets of lights 50ft apart. after it cuts out it refuses to start up on its own, but a couple second blast of easy start down it, it cracks back up and then runs fine the rest of the day. the day after it first did it i serviced the engine (oil n filters) but didnt help, few days later i swapped the fuel sensor, coolant temp sensor and swapped the fuel filter again, along with brimming the tank and adding a injector cleaner additive but again no luck, had it plugged in to diagnostics (not vagcom) and nothing comes up but then the engine management light isnt on
any ideas as to what it might be?
think I'm going to have a nosey in the tank and have a look at the egr valve this weekend and see if they can shed any light

nobody got any ideas for it?
noticed today that its cutting out when it hits 70 degrees on the temp gauge, could it be heat related? not sure what temp the egr shuts off again, also thinking possibly swapping the coolant temp gauge again as they seem to be a common issue

Could be numerous things. Would get someone to read the faults code/s before you start swapping parts.

tried it tho, on a mates brand new snap-on diagnostics n nothing comes up, so not sure itd be worth paying to get vagcom put on it

IMHO it is worth it.
On a B6 Passat it was the difference between me nailing down the issue to two potential faults and simply replacing things on a whim; the engine had a misfire everywhere bar idling with alot of black smoke; an OBD reader came up with a MAF Error ;saying the reading was low). Almost every person and keyboard warrier (and previous mechanic for the car )said to replace the MAF but the error made zero sense bar the black smoke. In the end VCDS showed a fluctuating MAF reading in addition to most of the injector quality values being right at the limit of acceptable. The latter (and MAF low error) both pointed to the camshaft being terminally worn (which it was ; the lobes were near enough round for the best part). That was via VCDS.
With that in mind I would say to get it onto VCDS and to get someone with some knowledge to come to an assessment of what could be wrong before spending cash on hoping to fix a tricky issue.
Can you hear the low pressure pump engaging with the ignition on. Bar the pumps on the injectors themselves the PDs tend to have a low pressure pump (in the fuel tank) and a tandem pump (on the rear of the camshaft) to further increase the pressure before the injector pumps do the rest.

I'll agree get it on Vagcom as they are the best at finding issues on Vw/audi cars. Snap on is very good gear but only checks the normal stuff, vagcom is dedicated to VW's and has more options of what to look at.
Only other thought is as you say it happens at 70deg, are there not 2 temp sensors fitted on a PD passat? If you've changed one, maybe its the other that is an issue. Of course if you use vagcom you can see what temp each sensor is reading at.

Do you surf any vw forums? If so you might find someone local that would read the codes for beer money?

When you say the engine cuts out, do the headlights die? Does it sound like it's misfiring like a coil isn't firing before it dies?
Just had the exact same description of fault happen on my 05 Subaru LGT. It was the alternator. When you pull up to the lights, the idle can't turn the dying alternator over fast enough to keep the battery above 12V (most modern cars need 12V at a minimum, if not more) if you had heater, screen defroster on it simply can't keep up.
My mrs was driving it home from work, when the ECL came on, then the headlights cut out, then the dash, then it started misfiring, as she pulled up to a stop sign when the engine revs dropped.
I'd take a multimeter with you, think you'll find it's the alternator not keeping the battery charged, or a loose ground.
