85' Audi 100 using a lot of water

What could this possibly be?

Using about 1.5 litres on a 10 mile run

Well have you begun by looking for a leak? Are you getting lots of steam from your exhaust? If so may be headgasket

I had similar with my old scirocco, ws the heater matrix had gone. If its running ok, then I'd be looking for a leak

Well at least we know what vehical it is for a change
Look for a leak possably? open bonnet see wet ?
Ok onto propper diagnosis, does the screen mist up if you aim the heater at it, any damp patches on the carpet? are there stains around the rad cap, rad or pipework, A/F (if used?)fluoresces under UV light (if you have one ?) and will usually leave a stain when dried out, usually whiteish.
As said above does the zorst steam on a warm day (like today), it will spit water for a while till fully warmed up so try it after a short drive.

Well the heater doesn't work full stop!!!

And the exhaust isn't the best test as half of it is missing but it does seem to take a while to warm up.

I topped up the water about 2 hours ago to see if it's leaking, but first noticed a rusty water stain on the floor???

Nothing has leaked so far :/


As stated before I'm no mechanic, absolutely rubbish with my hands unless there's a paint brush in em lol

points towards headgasket , if its leaking that much I'm sure you would see it on the road or wet carpets

The passenger side footwell is quite damp but I thought that was because there was a hole in the battery tray?

well only you can decide on that

if theres 1.5 of near boiling coolant entering the cabin then youd prob know about it , misty screen and it smells a bit too

run it up over some dry cardboard and have a very good look with a torch around the rad and hoses etc, if its a leak it should be pretty obvious
