Hi again! Can anyone tell me if/how to identify if my Mk2 Cortina has a collapsible steering column? This is necessary (under law here) for my proposed rover transplant. ... Cheers

By looking at it - follow what comes out of the steering box to the point it meets the wheel. If there's a collapsible section, you'll see it. UK market cars didn't have a collapsible column - I suspect you have one under the convoluted plastic section immediately behind the wheel.

Hi, Mk2 Cortina,s had steering boxes with solid columns. Fords went to collapsible columns with rack and pinion steering, Mk3 Cortinas, Capris and Escorts.

Colin I'm pretty sure late export models had a collapsible column - what you say is certainly true for domestic cars, the OP's car is an Australian export model with the three spoke Escort/Capri style steering wheel and a convoluted plastic cover immediately behind the wheel. IIRC this covers a collapsible section.

Thanks eternaloptimist. The Build-date on mine is 6/71 so it's pretty late alright! I haven't had a chance to have a good look at the column yet (work/kids etc) but your description of of it is 100% accurate. It'd be nice if all this info was in a book somewhere. For example I have a workshop manual, original owners manual and the compliance plate and none of them have the weight of the car in/on them!
