Should I go for spacers or boring out?

Long story short, wanting to fit wheels with 57.1mm centerbore on car with 60.1mm, would it be better to fit spacers or have the center bored out a little bit?

Depends on the offset and arch clearance. Boring them would be cheaper than hub-centric spacers.

Got some already, the wheel offset is a little lower than what I currently have, but the wheels themselves are 2 inches narrower so I'd imagine the clearance would be alright?

Try them with the spacers if you have them first and if they fit then problem solved? or am I missing something?

I'm about to pull the trigger on buying the wheels which is why. I probably should have mentioned that

For me this is a case of do you need spacers or not? What is your over all priority? Stance? Handling? If your fitting skinny wheels then you may want the spacers to push them out to fill the arches. If your more interested in handling you may want to run without spacers to attain a better king pin inclination or something. Either boring or spacers will get the wheels bolted to your car but there's alot more too it than that!

Oooh thanks for that, was wondering what the effects of choosing one over the other would be! Think I'll get them bored out, wouldn't mind the extra clearance and if it aids the handling a bit then that's another bonus.

It's not as simple as saying spacers will make it handle worse. You need to assess the overall effect on the geometry from changing the wheels. As a general rule you want the centerline of your new wheels to be in the same place as the centerline of the original wheels the car came with. Google king pin inclination understand why. Usually these things are a compromise.

Am a little confused. If you space them out on normal spacers, enough that the wheel does not locate on the spigot, (because of bore difference) then all the weight of the car will be on the studs, which is not that safe or ideal. If you use hub centric spacers, the spigot on the spacer will be same as the car, so the wheels still won't fit. Just bore the centre bore of the wheels, will be cheaper and safer.

That's not how bolting wheels on works. All the spigot does is ensure the wheel is centred. It doesn't support the weight of the car, and nor do the studs. Lots of cars are not hub-centric.

Ta for all the responses, I've bought them and I'll get them bored out. Not sure how much that costs (I'd imagine it varies from place to place) but if the adapters have any value I could always sell them to pay a little towards it.

(I will try them with the adapters but I'm 99% sure I'll go down the above route)

I've always preferred boring them out, you need to find someone with a laithe big enough.

Or someone with a milling machine. Or get brave with a die grinder. I did my freelander wheels carefully by hand an they are still on the car 3-4000 miles later.

I would die grind them, but they went on a rally car, so it wasn't worth risking it

Shouldn't matter either way when you think about it but if you know of someone with the gear to do it properly then I say why not. Much neater and it does guarantee the wheel is centred nicely.

i agree, but when you are chucking round over 10 grand of rally car, you want to get rid of as many possible issues as you can.

i agree, but when you are chucking round over 10 grand of rally car, you want to get rid of as many possible issues as you can. 

Absolutely wouldn't want it going wrong on a road car though at the same time..

I usually charge around £25 to bore out 4 wheels, but I'm not particularly local to you (Daventry)

Didn't know it could be done that cheap, Daventry is about an hour's drive from me I think which isn't too bad.

I'll wait 'til they get here but if you wouldn't mind doing it I'd be interested..

They'll need to be bare rims though
