Honda Civic 3G\E-at torsion bars

Hi been lowering my brothers civic using bc racing suspension all going well all fitted but front won't go down at all due to torsion bars,having never come across torsion bars before I'm a little apprehensive to fiddle with them before getting more info on what to do with them,another thing I need to no is are they needed as the old struts were just a shock and torsion set up now the new suspension has a coilover shock set up more pics to follow

They look like EG coilovers, had a quick google and everybody just seems to adjust the torsion bars on the earlier cars so they probably wont fit.

No there for 3G civic. They're not for ek I would have bought them if they didn't fit
They are spring and everyone else says keep them in because they don't have coilover they have shock and torsion

they're definitely later Civic fitment, my brothers got them on his CRX Del Sol, the little shoulder at the bottom is where the bottom fork attaches. I doubt the shell would be strong enough to carry the vehicle weight through the shock mounting, plus how are you planning it to steer? The Civic they're for uses a top A arm for the upper suspension pivot.

So you think bc racing have sent me suspension that doesn't fit a civic ah it was advertised as suspension for this car reg was checked suspension fits and everything it's just the torsion bar is to stiff

I'm sure if there was a bolt on coilover kit there would be lots of posts on the internet about it, not a load of posts saying its difficult as nobody makes a kit. You'd have to recreate the torsion beam but without the splines to get rid of it, but like I said the chance of the stock shock absorber mounting standing up to supporting the weight of the car is slim

I've found loads about the bc racing coilovers application to civic 3 gen and loads been fitted some use them some don't but all are used in conjunction with torsion bars,car craft boon use coils up front and torsion bars without reinforcement as do a few other ive seen while searching these coilovers are advertised for the 3 g civic AH and are a bolt on kit also have emailed them before purchase you can find them on eBay the torsion bar just need to be reindexed and evedently the reason for the front coil is to assist the torsion bar so that a thicker bar isn't needed for stiffer ride

Ah, fair enough then. Lowering the torsion bar should just be a case of knocking it out, twisting it a set number of splines then putting it back in. You might need to regrind one of the splines though.

Those are the correct coilovers BC have decided to add the spring to the original set up. People love or hate them but you will decide once there fitted. I think the added spring means you don't have to upgrade torsion bars.

As for the torsion bars its pretty simple.

1) First you take the caps off the front and back of the bar.

2) From the front of the car you can see the double spline that is different to the others. I marked with tippex where this was, marking it out helps down the line.

3) Using a hammer and centre punch knock the torsion bar toward the back of the car slightly. Then go under the car and remove the rear circlip.

4) Knock the bar back towards the front of the car and remove the front c clip.

5) You can then knock the torsion bar out towards the back of the car, be sure to take note of the small dot. Index mark on the rear of the torsion bar sleeve.

6) Re index the torsion bar one notch for lows, or two for mega lows. It helps to angle the front arms up as your knocking the bars in, this is where your previous markings help you out.
Looking towards the front of the car from the rear IIRC the passenger one needs to be indexed clockwise and the drivers CCW.

Doing it this way means you don't have to grind out the double spline.

We got so far with it but couldn't bang the bars out,the coilovers a great just the front being held up and a lot of others use coils aswel so that's what we will do,I don't understand what the adjuster bolt does someone said to just loosen it to adjust height but I can't see there's much adjustment in it and I loosen it it of a bit but didn't notice any difference

if you have taken the clips off both ends of the torsion bar it will knock out. Some people struggle as they can seize up inside the sleeve.

The nut does offer some adjustment but not much at all.

Have you got any pics? Can you not lower it more with the coilover?

You do need to get the torsion bars out and indexed ideally (get a bigger hammer )

hi when you index torsion bar do you just turn in one tooth opposite the direction arrow on the back of the bar? and i cant seem to see the front c clip on the front can i knock forward from the back far enough to expose it

Personally, I would get rid of the splines on the torsion bar, find a way to bolt it in place.

The coils are designed to run alongside the torsion bars though. The shock towers are pretty weak on these cars too.
