I've read a few times that the Honda Aerodeck was originally supposed to be an updated Scimitar for Reliant.   |

 Heuliez later BX coupe prototype. The design influence seems very clear. Though with cars like the Hyundai Pony, Lada Samara, FSO Polonez, Chrysler/Simca/Talbot Alpine, Renault 20/30, Nissan Sunny/Cherry/Pulsar & many more this was undeniably the definitive shape of the era. As for Aerodeck, the Scimitar inspired many sporting estates like Lancia HPE, Volvo P1800ES. So singling out the Aerodeck designed soo much later and in Japan seems like the criticism of those who like think the Japanese copy EVERYthing; especially when it merely enlarged upon and amalgamated the styling of their earlier 3g Civic hatchback & 2g Prelude coupe. |

I wasn't saying that it was copied or a derivative, I was saying that it was explicitly designed for Reliant as a new GTE but after one of Reliant's frequent ownership changes but they ended up being broke again so the design was hawked around other companies. I've read a couple of times that Honda bought the design study and re-styled the front and other elements to fit with their corporate identity but retained some elements (the shape of the rear windows, the opening glass rather than a conventional hatch) from the design study was heavily influenced by the earlier Scimitars. |

Volvo didn't want it, so the design was sold to Citroen instead. Happens more often than you'd think actually - Does this Italdesign Lucciola look familiar?   Designed in 1992 by Italdesign Guigaro as a replacement for the Fiat Cincquecento and shown at the Bologna Motor show that year and then the Turin motor show where the Fiat bosses saw it and had not interest in taking the design house on to finish the design - possibly because the cincquecento was only 2 years old at this point and it didn't align with their direction at the time. This most commonly happens (as with the Tundra/BX) when a design studio independently takes it upon itself to do a conceptual design for an existing company and the company isn't interested. It then becomes an open market for anyone else to carry on the design if they wish. These occurances are often not well publicised for obvious reasons There is some contention also as to whether or not the Pininfarina designed Audi Quartz which went no further in 1981,  had some inspiration at least on the Pinin designed Alfa GTV about 10 years later  Among many others... |

Haha thanks for the positive feedback - theres probably quite a lot stored up in the old noggin from years of being in the auto design industry! After their efforts upon Alfas 105 Giulia GT it was always presumed that Bertones design for the 1965 Mazdas Lucé 1500 had first been refused by Alfa. I'm not sure I'd agree with that example. As far as I'm aware the Luce was designed from scratch through a contract between Mazda and Bertone. Exactly the same with Alfa. Just so happens that the cars were all designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro. A lot of his designs from similar periods look very similar, and this is a good example. Again, how different do the Alfasud and the Scirroco look:   Also both designed by giugiaro within a couple of years of each other. There are obvious styling differences - where he took influence from past vehicles from each marque in order to maintain some sort of brand continuity. But the overall shape and proportions are very similar. The 1958 Austin 'Farina' A40 and the 1960 Peugeot 404, despite being completely different sizes and shapes have very similar design elements. The round lamps, deep set grilles, slab sides with chrome trim extending from the centreline of the headlamp, high wing-tip style rear lamps. If you park the two next to each other the hoods are nearly identical in shape, surface treatment, just slightly different sizes. This is not because one was a copy of the other or there is any link between the two other than they were both designed within Pininfarina under contract for each respective company during a very similar timeframe.   However by that definition you could also presume the Trabant was also designed by Pinin during the late 50s. Unfortunately not, it just took heavy inspiration from what were very popular designs and trends at the time.  This, in my opinion is completely different to the Tundra/BX, the Lucciola/Matiz and to a certain degree the Quartz/GTV. Each of these was created by a design house not under contract with the OEM - they were either fishing for work and made a concept off their own backs or they were under contract only to experiment with a concept level design with a view to gaining work from future development once this stage was complete. In each of these cases, whatever the circumstances, the OEM chose not to go with the design and the design house was free to sell the design elsewhere. Strangely these sold-on-designs end up being changed from the original to a much greater degree than those designs mentioned above which simply look very similar to each other because they were created by the same people. All of this is ammunition against those who say 'everything looks the same today'... |
