Here we have for sale my 1992 J plate Golf 1.8 CL Auto.
It's a very early MK3 from the very first year of production. The model won European Car of the Year in that same year.
It's presented in what can only be described as totally mint condition for a car of it's 23 years of age. An early MK3 Golf has to be a very rare find in this condition.
The car has resided with one family from new and covered a genuine mileage of just over 53k. The car is in daily use so mileage will increase slightly.
The originality of this ultra basic grandad spec Golf is amazing right down to the original dealer rear window sticker and number plate surrounds from Colebrook & Burgess VW/Audi of Newcastle upon Tyne (later taken over by Benfield Motors)
I bought the car with no history other than old MOT history. Seeing the amazing condition and experiencing the almost as new way that it drives I had to do a bit of research to find it's history. The car has Benfield Motors stickers all over it advising when next service due etc so I contacted them. The car is known to them but unfortunately they migrated to a new computer system last year and deleted records of vehicle solder than 1995. I think it's a fair assumption the car was looked after at the dealer in its early years but no records.
I have however uncovered evidence of a service history starting slightly later in the car's life from 2001/33k miles. I have a comprehensive list of annual services and all other work carried out on the vehicle at an independent garage Western Way Garage in Darras Hall near Newcastle. It was kept MOT'd every year despite minimal mileage covered each year.
The car drives perfectly as it should for a low mileage well maintained VW and the autobox is very smooth. It's not a quick car with just 75bhp (I think) but it does make good use of it feeling quite peppy and torquey.
The interior is drop dead showroom condition 10 out of 10. Carpets amazing, boot is like a new car, original immaculate black logo embossed VW overmats are all present.
This car is ripe for a custom VDUB project if you dare interfere with it's originality. Eurolook or what about the ultimate sleeper - original look with a tuned VR6 lump!?
I love the basic austere spec of this car. Only luxury is PAS. The steering wheel is kind of Wolfsburg basic 2 spoke style which I love.
Bodywork is 9/10 and only suffers the odd graze and scrape to a minor level. No rust.
The car came to me with a liberal coating of black waxoyl along door bottoms, cills and door checks which has done a great job of preserving the weak spots of an old VDUB. I removed some of it in obvious areas to avoid the kids getting it on their clothes.
Minor effort/expense required to make this a show car and this is me being very picky:
Hardly noticeable car park scrape to passenger side rear arch
3 minor rust bubbles above rear number plate surround (very small and not visible from 5 feet, paint not broken)
Sony head unit not picking a radio signal
Valet the engine bay - never been touched - original
Replace or refurb the steel wheels. They are very presentable but have been repainted in a 7 out of 10 fashion to smarten them up.
Grab this car while you can. In 5 years in similar condition we all know it will be worth double. There is a 1.8 CL on here recently with 5k miles that sold for £7,000. A lot less miles I know but similar condition.
