Salut! Great project. I live in a cabin and am partly off grid (woodburner heating, battery bank power etc) Its great news for you that they have banned hydraulic fracturing in France because other places in the world where it is still allowed, it has ruined people's well water because all the chemicals they inject into the ground to get gas out end up in peoples' wells, they have basically ruined the aquifers with toxins and even radioactive material. People and animals are getting very ill and dying. (And they UK government are about to green light this insane industry here hence all the protests!) I hope to visit South West France in the next year or so. I was thinking of driving one of my LH drive vehicles over there

London - Dover - Calais (eurostar as its £80) Calais- west via Le Mans because racecar, Le Mans - La Rochelle because le de da - west as far as can be arsed / until we see the see. Seeing the sea - Bordeaux because red wine. Then Bordeaux - headding east to Blanquefort.. My in-laws have a place about 30mins north of Saintes, I can highly recommend stopping in LR (or Châtelaillon-Plage) for some seaside lunch. You're also passing near Cognac and through Pineau territory, get some it's lush! We're heading down for a fortnight end of April, CAN'T WAIT Also, if you can time it right, this: Circuit des Remparts is excellent and not a million miles from your parents' place. (here's my mini-report from a couple of years ago link) I have no useful input on the well drilling.

Update. We have made 3 meters of drill string including the 1m part of the bit, 10.no interconnects made, we need more scaffold tube.. Does anybody have any offcuts they would like to donate? Can collect. 2" ID very thick wall tube was sut up to make interconnects, fits nice inside the 50mm OD scaffold bar sections. There is a 1-2mm gap around the circumference though and I think too much water will leak out.. As it is not under much pressure we will try gaffa tape, first as a gasket between the two tubes, then wrapping it around each joint, crude but we will see! I don't want to have to machine O-ring grooves in each interconnect. This is the latest drill tip idea, it leaves 4 small holes pointing forward where the water can 'jet' out of to help loosen the dirt as it cuts, perhaps I explained that badly, but small orifices should allow the water to exit with some force to loosen the 'soil'..

First drill using the hosepipe to provide water 'under pressure'. It is nowhere near enough, water doesnt even fill the string, you can hear it pouring down the scaff bar. Need MORE. Hosepipe was off in this picture but you can see all the sand / soil / silt which it lifted out the hole, interestingly small pebbles and stones which were suspended in the soil all sink to the bottom and ends up as a pile of gravel at the bottom of the hole which eventually snags up the bit so much that it grinds to a halt. drilled 24" before that happened though. So I think we will fit the original helix auger with an adapter for the drill string so we can fit it and clean out the hole of gravel every few feet or meter.. Note the water was turned off in this pic. Me looking very very special here, note the debris surrounding the hole which the water has carried out, the thing is working! We have a small honda water pump to use when we are over there but it is still only a 1" ID pipe outlet on that pump, I might buy a bigger one, as its large water volume that is needed to carry the cuttings up and out the hole. We may make our own cutting mud by using a biodegradeable thickener additive for the water as this will greatly increase the cutting lift rate, but it might kill the pump, cornflower or gelatine is what people use for potable water wells.. We will see, if anything it would definitely make it more fun to watch like the ghost busters river of slime.. More pictures to follow. PS we now have big black chickens:

So we dug a settling pit and a trench from the propsed drill lcation to it, lined with pond liner as we couldnt afford to loose 'that' much water over the week, in case of no rain recharging our storage capacity.. We pretty quickly discovered there was a gravel/pebble sayer 2m down, having tried drilling in another location we still encountered the same. Problem was the stoner were about 3-8cm in diameter which couldn't be lifted up out the well bore with the water flow from our pump.. The bit kept getting jammed and veering off to the side rather than down. So we tried the original auger's helix bit with a flight welded around the bottom 30cm. It helped a bit but it was slow progress. We thought if we had a much smaller cutting bit, it would penetrate through and around the gravel, so we got all scrap heap challenge in the back garden.. Had to make a welding helmet from a wine box and welding lense we got from a local hardware shop: It was even funnier than it looks.. 8cm bit made from off cuts of the teeth of the original 9". Much more cutting torques now!

2m depth achieved perfectly, then hit a brick wall. The gravel acts like ball bearings, just rattling the sides of the well bore out rather than drilling down more. And they quickly blunted all the teeth. Also note we kept loosing nylocks down the hole, they all kept unscrewing! Just like Texas.. We (i) decided that too much sediment was making its way back into the wellbore and we needed a settling pond in additino to a draw off pond, it helped quote a lot in terms of penetration speed gigidy.

Our 100cc ish honda 4-stroke water pump & 4.no meter cube IBC's. It needed drastically more water flow, ideally 2x 2" outlet petrol pumps to lift gravel, sand an' all out the 'ole. !!
