The 8cm bit achieved 3m depth eisily, but the gravel soon packed around the bit and jammed it in situ, more water pressure (read volume) would have liberated a lot more stones which would have allowed us to continue. Starting to loose interest & get drunk at this point.. (lunchtime) @ 3m depth. Lunchtime fun:

Lol, we got to 3m and hit gravel, the bit wouldn't break up this gravel and just churned it around and made a large cavity and the gravel layer just ate up all the water we kept pumping down.. we would have to sleeve it and continue.
Latest plan is to set in those large 1m diameter concrete sewer pipe sections and hand-dig while stood inside, and as each case section lowers down, add another, like the proper way of digging a well.
Hard work and high risk of death, we will be starting shortly..

Apparently it's cheaper than worrying about all that safety stuff.

Should be fine, plenty of holes have been sunk in similar fashion, getting muck out of the hole will be the main cause of cursing.
Obviously don't have anything petrol/ diesel running nearby and maybe have a safety rope fastened on at all times while digging, if you get overcome with fumes someone can yank you out from the top with the risk of coming down to save you and being overcome themselves.

Well we figured just one guy at a time with a spade down the hole, with a tripod type derrick arrangement and a block and tackle to rope out the spoil with a bucket. But now you've got me thinking maybe some kind of engine driven jet washer arrangement with a sump pump capable of solids to pump out the spoil, maybe on a very long lance to avoid the need for down-hole works..
Maybe install a platform at the -2/3m mark to avoid the need for a 7m lance, (water in neighbours well was -7m..
