I prefer a bit of chrome and wood too, it looks much better!
Isn't the dash real wood on the XJ8? - I imagine it is? - It is real wood on my XJ40, well a mix of veneered plywood and wood.

Well it looks like nice veneered wood.... But it's not! Fitted the chrome grille last night, looks much better imo, need the chrome strip across the boot lid now

Shame.
You have to own one of these with both eyes open - don't spend too much in case it goes Pete Tong.

Oh, I am sorry to hear this. It was a lovely looking car. The earlier V8 has a couple of known issues - a plastic water pump impeller which can fail, leading to overheating (probably happened in this case) and timing chain tensioner failure. They drive really well - the engine is smoother and more powerful than the six cylinder which preceded it - but as you say, with these issues, they're not so strong as the virtually indestructible Jaguar six. A sad day for you and your Jag.

a plastic water pump impeller which can fail, leading to overheating (probably happened in this case) and timing chain tensioner failure. Damn cheap materials, plastic water pump impeller 'pahhh', penny pinching on build costs. Sure no waterpumps last for ever but you would like to think you get a chance by seeing a change to coolant usage so that a carefully owner can at least head off terminal failure. The thing is, you buy a car like this, how far do you go with preventative maintenance, do you replace the water pump and timing chain tensioners 'as a matter of course'.......not a five minute job. Cars like this should not be expiring for reasons such as imploding pump impellers, damn bad luck there

That's crud. Waterpumps should not be included in preventative/periodic maintenance.
Oh well, nothing left to do but to bastardise it, and put in a 4.4 TTD motor from a Range Rover sport...

Have you looked into a second hand engine? - they may well be pretty cheap.

Dan hasn't got the time to get this back on the road. It's a shame cos as with all Dans cars it was extremely clean and a fine example. Someone needs to buy this and throw a decent lump in it. Much to tidy to break imo.
