Well i finally got a big barge after chasing a few cars since december, as i put on my big barge thread, my work is based only a mile from home so its time i scratched the jaguar itch picked up this xj8 for a three figure price, 112,000 miles with full history, the guy that owned it was very honest about its faults, slight rust on the rear arches, abs and stability control warning lights on, other than these slight issues the car is in great condition, and drives superb no clonks rattles or any body damage anywhere, i looked a six cars before i bought this one, four s types and two xj models ive spent the last few weeks cleaning inside and out, the leather was gliptoned up after JEFFERS on here told me how good the product was, the interior has cleaned up beautiful. today i removed both front abs sensors which are both knackered! I'm going to replace these then try to source an abs module which i think is causing the stability light to stay on. the minor rust on the rear arches will be tackled soon, the rest of the body is superb and wont need anything other than a good clay treatment which i will do shortly. i just want to prove that a big old barge can be bought and improved for beer money and so far id say if youve thought about buying one do it!!! few pics now and will update over the coming months, cheers Dan rear arch to do and todays work wheel sensors removed for inspection The abs module i need to replace

It's nice to see you finally got the right one. Looks real good in that colour. Glad the leather came up as you wanted it to and to top it off, Petrol is pretty cheap, a fine result.

I don't know if jags are the same, but chances are the ABS and traction control will use the same sensors, so the ABS unit is likely to be ok, just the wheel sensors causing grief.
If you have a multi-meter with a frequency testing option you can usually disconnect them, pop the meter on them and spin the wheel, if ok they will give a steady output as wheel spins and slows.
A nice buy and an interesting steed

Nice car Dan, just myself picked up an XJ8 on an S plate yesterday with the 3.2 engine. If you need parts, I highly recommend EuroJag - they are local to me and I've been for a rummage today for mine, but they also do phone orders and will post out. They stock used and new parts too. Excellent service and reasonable prices ... 01325 722777 / www.eurojag.com

Ran a 2000 model xj8 for a year or two, they seem to suffer from the same ailments, abs module can be cut open and the soldered joints reflowed if your handy with a slodering iron, it can be removed without disconecting the brake pipes , just bend them up away from the clips, you will be lucky if its just the senders. The cam chain tensioners are on borrowed time at that mileage, again a cheap anough fix with pattern parts around the 50 quid mark. The thing that amoused me no end was the so called sealed for life transmission that bursts its front A drum and after fixing that with upgraded parts I sold the swear word, what a sea unt of a car. Good luck with yours.

Wow, that's a lot of car for the money! It looks really stylish, much better than an S type. The S type didnt replace the XJ. I love the x308 but it's a bit small for me I'll try an X350 next.

Anyone know how to find the paint colour name for my car? The x350 is a nice jag but I prefer the shape of these models,,,plus my budget was £1500 no more, so I saved £750 of the budget!

Meteorite might it be? Metallic silver. X308s are so cheap now it is very tempting. Most folks recommend the post 1999 models as they had non-Nikasil engines and improved timing chain tensioners (I've read). Did you check yours over for rust in the rad cross member, front subframe, front bulkhead and rear A frame? Ebay has a lot of MOT failed X308s for sale with rust in these areas. It seems you need to crawl all over an X308 rust hunting, just like you had to when viewing a Series 3 XJ back in the day............
