The usual 'feelers out' sort of post!
My BMW is much loved, but it's also chosen the right time to run out of MOT and get a windscreen crack, so if anyone has anything I like to swap, I'm open to it.
The car:
Red metallic BMW 528i Touring, 1998 S registration, 105,000 on the clock when the clock works enough to show it, highline MID, highline (dot matrix) dash, cream leather interior with integrated booster seats (manual adjustment), automatic in good working order, Multifunction wheel, cruise (works), climate (works), auto wipers (work), load cover is present, CD changer is adapted one. Has those BBS alloys on, Style 5 or somesuch. Tyres might be due for replacement.
I've driven this since August, have done about 5,000 miles in it, oil and filters changed a couple of thousand ago, it has always been stable, quick and fun. Returns 27mpg in very mixed driving, rising to mid-30s (once, 42!) on a good run (okay, the 42 was in a 50 zone). The air suspension at the back seems to be working. The remote locking and boot release work.
Downsides of this lovely car:
The headlights are horrid. I replaced one set of adjusters and the quality was shocking. They need polishing and adjusters.
The offside rear window is not connected to the window mechanism.
The tailgate has been replaced in the past and the paint isn't brilliant, plus the plastics around the top of the glass hatch were bodged. I started fixing this.
The heater controls are shedding buttons everywhere.
MOT-wise, I anticipate two, maybe three issues. One being the windscreen and why I am thinking of changing the car.
Issue one: ABS light. The wire is frayed to the OSF wheel, visibly, and that wheel reports the error on INPA or whatever the computer thing I do is called. £10 to fix, but didn't have time before Christmas and now life is interesting.
Issue two: SRS light. It is the passenger seat pad issue so a bypass resistor or proper fix will deal - it goes away when reset and comes back when someone sits in the passenger seat.
General wear: The brakes and tyres might be a bit shabby.
Windscreen crack: It got a stonechip, the stonechip froze, now there's a crack across the full width of the windscreen and a good couple of inches up into the swept area. I am very sure this is a fail, but I haven't tried my luck. On top of the curse word lights and other jobs, plus being seriously unsure if a windscreen claim would make my insurance go up (NCB means nothing, just the quote!) I dithered on it.
It won't get scrapped and lots of people said the wheels are interesting and worth a bit on their own (BMW Style 5, BBS RC035, 8J x 17 ET20 offset) (they aren't in perfect original condition, so until someone says "HERE! TAKE MY MONEY!" they're just round things the car rests on to me. I'll stick a pic up but there's a thread I made about it when I got it.
