This silly thing passed its MOT after having a brake cable snap whilst on the testing equipment, rather there than on the road I guess, disc brakes are deffo on the list of things I want these drums aren't exactly confidence inspiring compared to other bikes I've ridden. Need to go for an obligatory first fill photo. Deffo doesn't look as good with L plates on it :/

Still collecting bits and sorting the new home out, car has yet to actually come to its new home, hopefully soon, it's starting to look sad. Don't read anything into the VR6 block sat there, that's to become our coffee table.

A few hours today resulted in a turbo less 1.8. I couldn't resist this first though... Removed the intake bits in as big a piece as possible so there is less confusion come refit time. Drained oil and coolant, which used to be pink, or at least was in the reservoir. Started undoing the bolts to the manifold and downpipe, would you believe not a single one got stuck, in fact after I undid the first one the other two were finger tight. It became obvious that to get the turbo out I'd have to remove the exhaust manifold entirely, all but one stud came loose, these tools have saved my life time and time again. Having gotten the turbo out its actually really small, hot side has cracks which seems to be the norm on these, the reason I'm removing this is partly for more power, partly because the car would smoke when oil pressure is low, like when sat at traffic lights. The turbine hardly has any movement.

Have I ever taken a turbo apart before, no. Will I be reusing this one, nope, let's have a look inside then. All going well I've removed the two c clamps holding the compressor side on but it seem so I still be stuck in, the whole chra rotates though won't pop out (I've even hammered it) oh well no cool fan blade ornament for me.

The crack on the hot side goes right through between the exhaust port and past the wastegate it's big enough to see light through so is definitely an increase in spool time if my thinking is correct, if you look closely enough you can see the crack runs right to the bridge in the centre of the port. Time to tidy the tools away so I can find them again next time, my legs are aching from leaning over the car yesterday.

Whilst we wait for the new turbo to turn up, lets do some more wiring much like when I first got the car. I have been putting this off but see no reason why not to do it now since half the engine bay is empty now and everything's easily accessible. There is literally plugs galore from things this car doesn't have that the Leon the engine came from probably did, I had tidied them up and hid them underneath the washer bottle to keep them out of the way for the past year and a half. Lets follow them all back and get rid... I'll have to take the dashboard apart or out to get to them fully as some run to the ECU I guess others to the fusebox, wiring is scary sometimes but none of these are essential to it running since it ran without them plugged in anyway, the N249 wires will be shortened and have a resistor soldered in instead of the unit which will complete the delete.

Hope you don't mind me asking. Are you upgrading The turbo, if so what too?? Also, the lower rear mounts, one bolt to engine and the other to the gearbox, I've used a newer cable shift box 02j (I think it's called) the mount that uses 3 long bolts on the box doesn't line up, the 3 long bolts only one will line up. Which mount did you use or are you using standard box?? Thanks Lee

luckily for you mine is an 02J too, I didn't do the conversion myself though I can take a picture tomorrow (I'm at work now) of my mount for you. I'm going for a Beach Buggy Turbo which is a hybrid k03 with k04 internals. Should be able to take me to a reliable 250bhp (could push a lot more but the cars already quick enough and needs drivability mods) though I'm unsure what to do about fuelling at the moment.

Thanks. I know it's hard to see and very cheeky. But stamped into the mount is the part number. IF buy chance you can get to it I would be eternally great-ful. This is the last bit of the puzzle for me! Thanks again. Oh last one, where you getting the turbo from ??

So as I'm sure your aware there are two mounts which go to the same bush, the first is the longer one, mines really rusty with no visible part number, looks exactly like this...picture from Google The second I can get a picture of is the rear mount. It's filthy down there in my car which is another reason to get in the bay and get working I suppose. 357199353a comes back as 20vt and corrado g60, I think to get it to line up will require undoing the front engine mount for wiggle room before shifting the whole lot about. They join together like so...

This little lot also fell off the engine, that oil catch can I talked about pages ago is going to make an appearance.

Yesterday the other half and I helped as best we could to marshal for the Bournemouth Distinguished Gentleman's ride, I wanted to go on the Vespa but something came up. It ran from Poole quay to the Brewhouse via a few other locations, lovely weather and beautiful bikes, all of this ofcourse meant I couldn't work on the golf, fear not though I have a few days off! Let's get back to wiring, removing the odds and ends has accidentally got me removing and changing the routing for a more visually appealing setup. I really hadn't planned on tucking it but I didn't see why not at this point. Volkswagen has a nice way of making depinning easy, most of the plugs are in two parts and come apart with a click to allow the pins to be removed with ease. Lots of this: Turned into lots of this...
