Hi guys,
Could do with some clarification here as I've read some stuff on line and frankly I'm a little bit confused.
I know a couple of years ago the government reintroduced rolling tax exemption for cars over 40 years old. Doing the maths my car should fall within this bracket but from what I can read the exemption status doesn't start on January 1st it ticks over on the 1st April.
Now I'm not too sure if what I've read and subsequently written above is correct. Can someone clarify please
The car is a MK3 Cortina and was registered on 01/04/74 PCJ308M
When I check online it is still telling me it will be £230 odd for the year....
Thanks,
Gareth

"So, from 1 April 2015, vehicles built 40 years ago will be added to the scope of the exemption. The exemption cut-off date in Schedule 2 of the Act will be changed to 1 January 1974 to apply from 1 April 2014 as announced at Budget 2013, and to 1 January 1975 to apply from 1 April 2015 as announced at Budget 2014"

it isnt *technically* rolling again- they just keep moving the tax exempt cutoff date as part of the budget each year- hence the date moving from january to april. they could decide not to do it any year if they fancy.

Ah brill,
Thanks gt and dez
I'm a little confussed by that, should it be tax exempt or do I have to wait until the 1st April 2015 ?
On a side note, Dez did you sell the lada?

Just announced: from 1 April 2016 a vehicle made before 1 January, 1976, will be exempt from paying road tax (VED).

Just if anyone stumbles across this thread....
It is worth noting that the DVLA won't automatically change your car to being tax exempt (as I found out today!) and you have to send the log book off with a change of status. I was hoping that come the 1st April I could apply online and get a free disc but unfortunately it doesn't seem to work like that :-(

You can now change the VED class at a post office AFTER 1 April in the year that the vehicle qualifies.

yes, there is some confusion I have first hand reports of Post Offices giving both responses - some being able to change the tax class, others apparently not getting the option on their screens.
