Hi there guys,
I've got a 1992 Mercedes 190 1.8, and to be honest it's a total curse word to start from cold!
Once it's warm, or even just been started once it will start fine, that first time though, it takes ages, it just spins for a while, then starts coughing, back fires a bit and the finally catches, after 5 or 6 turns of the key.
If anyone has got any ideas of where to start it would be much appreciated, as it is damn annoying of a morning!

Its probably the big curse word IACV valve that looks like an aux water pump.
Try taking it appart and WD-40-ing before replacement.

they have a relay behind the battery. OVP relay, without this non of the cold start systems work. Can be cured sometimes by pulling and replacing.

Remove and clean the ICV (i have a spare from a 2.0L i may sell if it doesnt fit my 16v)
And,remove the OVP relay, pry open the aluminium casing, and resolder the joints as the solder cracks over time. Doing this solved my cold start issues. Theres a guide on mercedes-190.co.uk I think.

The cleaning of the ICV sounds straight forward enough,
this soldering business however......i shall have to have a word with one of the Lecky lads at work, although i think anything more complex than a continuity check is beyond most of them.

The solder is already present, it just has a crack in it. All you have to do is pry the aluminium cover apart from the bottom, and heat up each pool of solder until its molten, then remove the iron so it can set again. Its pretty easy
