My '89 MX5 (import) is fitted with an immobiliser, you have to put a 'key' (small circuit board) into a socket near the gear leaver for a while then you can start the engine (actually it kills all electrics). Basically it's a pain, waiting in line of you turn the engine off you have to restart the whole sequence, you can't bump start the car and I think it's playing up anyway. So was this a common fitment for MX5's? anybody know how to remove it? The socket looks like this (not my car) I know it's potentially dodgy asking how to remove an anti-theft device, but this for a car that will be primarily a track car.

It'll have a box under the dash that is spliced into the ignition wires that go to the key barrel. Both my old Eunos and my mate's MX5 have had these, I cut mine out. 2hr job (to do properly) - I removed the drivers seat and sat upside down in the car with my feet in the air whilst I removed it!!

So the wires to the ignition switch are cut and the box inserted so 'just' need to reconnect the cut wires.
Thanks for the info, sounds like it shouldn't be too difficult (jinxed it now).

Yep. Just take your time, trace the wires, pull the box out as much as you can before you begin. Make sure that you have a PROPER soldering iron too - not just a 5 pound amazon job. The wires for the ignition barrel are chunky!!
