On my Triumph GT6 I have CV joints on the driveshafts, which I know are on their way out and plan to replace soon due to backlash in them. I've just been for a quick blast around the block with a little spirited driving (I know I shouldn't have with the CVs as they are) and there is now a whine from the rear when off the throttle. Do CVs make this sort of noise when terminal or is it more likely to be the diff?

I would love to be proven wrong but whenever I have heard a whine it has always been the diff. I am sorry if it is not the news you wanted. With the power you are running have you considered hardened gearsets? I know that on the Stags only one supplier sells CROWNwheels and pinion gears which do not prematurely whine after a while (almost all of them do after a while). There may be something out there for the GT6s, unless you fancy a Subaru diff conversion .

The whine will be the diff. (Assuming you're not dating my ex missus!)
My Vitesse diff is getting progressively louder and I expect it to give up at some point eventually

Thanks for the responses, I feared it might be the diff but wasn't sure what happens to the CVs when they get terminal.

IME CVs getting terminal tend to click on the front or cause strange driveline issues as things begin the bind (a strange twitch or a driveline not as smooth as you would expect). Inner CVs dying tend to cause hideous vibrations regardless of which wheels are driven.

In my experience RWD diffs can get very noisy but can go on for a long time..

Ive just spent far too long chasing a whining noise at the back end of my omega. Drained and inspected the diff, still there, checked all bearings, all fine. Lowering it down on my ramp and noticed backbox had collapsed and was making a whining noise when i booted it. 4ft of 2 1/2" pipe later and no more whining
