Hi all, sorry for modern question but I've got to change a steering rack on a BMW mini and can't find too much on internet.
Anyone done job? Any tips?

I will ask, why? What's the issue/symptoms with it? Only as I know the pumps are host to a massive multitude of issues on these so thought I'd ask before you pull it apart  |

I have the complete front suspension off a Cooper if you need parts ?
90% the pump is on it . .

I think you have another fault else where like a bottom ball joint failed. |

Hi, the shaft that enters the main body of the steering rack from the column is the pinion gear, the teeth cut on it are on a slight angle and the pinion gear is shimmed to move it or out of engagement with the rack. When it wears it allows the rack itself to move about inside the body of the rack housing. Depending how it's constructed it will have adjustment either from above or below. When checked by movement of the road wheel it gives the impression of inner joint wear.

Its on ebay at the moment you can have the whole lot for 100 . Take off it all the parts you need . . Brakes ect it's complete

Hi, usually when they are built up the pinion gear goes into the body and engages with the rack itself, then a plate goes over the shaft and is bolted to the rack body to hold the pinion in engagement. the shims go between the plate and the body, it may just be a case of removing one of the shims to reduce the play.
