You can see from the photo, I keep the cover off, to check for "Black death" issue. It would be nice to start fresh, with all the dirt and oil being from my ownership...so how can I clean the engine? Degreaser and a waterblast?(Not directly onto electrical connection or ECUs of course) I guess it has a engine breather problem, as it seems a bit wet around that...and it is a known fault on the mercs c270. Any hints?

Oven cleaner has sodium hydroxide in it, for those who aren't aware, sodium hydroxide is also called lye. It's a very powerful base (the chemical "opposite" of an acid, if you will) and it eats the hell out of aluminum. I used a kitchen all purpose cleaner, and a tooth brush and a watering can. Post photo tomorrow.

Truck wash and a jet wash , spray it on and blast it off....squint it smarts a little.
Failing that I use cillitbang spray which when viewed at an obscure angle looks like an incredibly rude word but cuts through grease and road grime in seconds,...

Not 100% clean...but now I can see any leaks or problem areas in the future.

Re. Mr Muscle - I know a guy who uses it and swears by it. I was worried about it eating aluminium so I tried it on a scrap model glow engine and it didn't damage the alloy.
I also tried another brand of oven cleaner and it ate the aluminium. (Oven Pride I think it was)
So just saying, some oven cleaners seem to be safe to use but some aren't.
