hi guys , iv read many threads on here and seen pictures with wives and girl friends getting involed with restoration or cruising with them in there pride and joy ! well with my wife its a totally different story , i spent 2 years getting my car to look like this and iv had a lot of love off lots of people friends and strangers alike which is always nice .But the wife hates it , she wont come in it and would never in a million years drive it but i guess each to there own ! so just got me thinking there must be lots of you out there in this position, not sure if id like my wife to take an intrest in MY hobby its the one thing she has no control over lol , and i am safe she would never come on here either

Its better if they don't take an intrest, that way they don't really know how much parts cost!

Bex wont let me sell my rollcaged rally AX and even cheekily asked if i would consider putting it back on the road so she could use it?! she is also more than happy to roll around in my 87 volvo 360 but is happier in her new (to her) peugeot 206
she knows that its what makes me me, she doesnt take an interest in 'the build' and has no idea what hi spec 4 pots or Grp N dampers are, let alone their cost
keeper!

My ex wife hated my hobby, EX.... ..my lovely wife of ten years loves all my old motors and as long as the bills are paid she gives me a free reign.....my dream triumph stag is just a step to far on our budget tho! And I will add in ten years I've probably had around 50 cars

in my case it was me AND my car, have the same wife for 22 and a bit years now, been into old tractors ,motorcycles ,mopeds, bicycles, and so on. Always had the support i needed, as long bills where being paid, since she is going to be more disabled and loses more strength every year, one of here favorite cars to drive is the old 1979 Chevy Monte Carlo, because everything is power assisted it makes driving the car a breeze for her. To bad its on the ramp for sheet metal work and a respray and some other bits. Bought her a 1995 VW Corrado automatic but its not the same as the Monte Carlo so she hardly drives it. She cant wait to get the Monte Carlo of the ramp tho.

Both me and my wife have a love for, and used to own loads of classic minis. I just bought last week an old metro to do up, and she hasn't even looked at it! I suppose it's better that way, as we've only got room for one 'fun' car in the garage and this way she'll have no influence or interest in what I'll do during the build.

This girlfriend understands, everyone always asks how she copes with my old air-cooled, but she had a 1302s beetle before she met me.
The previous ones didn't like how harsh and low the mr2 was how dented the mk2 golf was how old the rocco k2's were, despite how comfy and reliable they were...
...she could be a keeper, especially as she let me build some bits of a ruston paxman 16RK3CT in the kitchen not so long ago.

In the first few months I was with mrs fp she didn't get the whole fascination with old cars, we had a huge bust up because I spent a lot of time and money on my car, i put it bluntly that "cars were there before you and they will be there after so if you don't like my passion for them there's the door because obviously you didn't like me." She then actually took time to see what I was doing and then "got it" I taught her alot of mechanics, 12 years later she's still here and has had a good few cool cars, she has had a s2 escort rs turbo for the past 5 or so years

I'm lucky, my missus totally gets it, I even guided her into buying a W124 Merc as a daily when we first met.
If were ever faced with the ultimate dilemma, me or the car, it'd be the car every time. Trust me, it's a lot easier to find a good woman than it is a good car. Joking aside though, it's a case of love me, love my 80s obsession. My missus is a 90s girl, 80s cars she likes, 80s music she doesn't. Oh well, nobody's perfect!
Can we have some more pics of that gorgeous Moggie please!

my wife doesnt understand it at all - but she like getting a ride in them lol. Seriously, she hated me sending time doing up cars - but thats my thing.....i wont stop!
You need to find a belance - if your partner doesnt like your thing, keep them away from it and just let them do their own thing! I mean, I'm not interested in make up but that doesnt mean i don't like the results! haha.

My ex-wife was a head f*ck. She likes old cars, driving them and the attention they get, but hated me spending time working on them! Then again, she also liked my wages but didn't like the time I spent at work, so I guess that pretty much sums her up! lol

my wife knows my hobby, she has lived with it for 16 years now and once she did her car up for a show. Took it to a show parked up next to mine... that was the first show she showed at and the last lol she said it was boring and expensive (her car cost £1800 over a 3 week period to get it up to scratch). She kept her car for a further 2 years but did manage to kerb all 4 Oz alloys badly ( which i refurbished and fitted to my old gold marea wagon . At the moment, I don't even own my own car (MOT failed last year and I just could not afford to fix all the problems so sold it on to someone that did) due to a few house related costs (chimney removed on one side, rebuilt chimney on other side, decorated, and new boiler about to be fitted). By July I should be back in something cool, and then the spannering will start again lol, and she already knows this and accepts its me and I will never change.

My Mrs isnt that bothered about cars, but she does like older VW's & pickup trucks lol. She told me last night to sell the CRV & buy something cool again & she was trying to get me to sell the Golf and get a MK2 Golf to replace it, would like to keep at least one sensible modern for Child moving duties.

My wife has no interest in cars, new or old, but she understands that its my hobbie and respects that - I just have to do everything by myself. However over the years she has learned quite a lot despite her best efforts and hates herself every time she corrects her friends miss-assumptions.

I only married MrsSmokeEm last October. It had to wait until then as she allowed me to spend our wedding savings buying mercdans old Granada from him. Then when that went, I built the Cortina and now onto the P100. She fully gets it and won't allow me to stop until we have a V8 Rumble in something cool.

Mine isn't really bothered, she takes a passing interest sometimes, and certain old cars appeal to her, but for the most part she just lets me crack on with it, and she sees the sense of driving a £500 daily and doing my own maintenance as opposed to £400 a month on finance. She doesn't drive so cars just aren't even on her radar. As for time, we don't live in each others pockets so she doesn't mind me spending time on the car, and I don't mind her spending time doing girly stuff. Sometimes she comes to shows, her rationale being that even if the cars aren't interesting she likes camping and getting drunk.
Only complaint I've ever had is she wouldn't go in my AX VTS until I replaced the buckets with proper seats, because apparently the harness hurt her knockers.

I have had my missus kneeling on a slam panel helping me get a cam belt onto the pulleys on a Rover Turbo. On Christmas day, in the middle of cooking Christmas dinner for eight people. I think she's a keeper.

I used to have this problem. Ten years ago I dated a girl who'd drag out "It's me or the cars" regularly. I gave in the first time, lost a beautiful MkII Cortina over it. But she quickly started trying to use it as a method to be totally unreasonable and made all sorts of stupid demands with the same line. Never fell for it again. After the first time it was "Don't let the door hit your rear end on the way out - they make millions of girls everyday and old cars are rare".
After that, part of the getting to know you phase of any relationship always included the question "what's your dream car?" And if it wasn't something old and interesting, the relationship never developed. Now I'm with a girl who's first car was a 1960's Holden. By choice. She helps with the Mini (and the Commodore, even though she isn't a fan of Commodores). And we have a long term plan involving an early Jaguar XJ6, which is her dream car. Hell, our first date was a 50's/60's car show.
I always believed that if a girl was truly interested in me, then accepting the fact that I'm obsessed with old cars is part of the deal. Just like I have to accept that they may be into owning pets, roller-derby or anything else.
