Why cant they just put a 1975 plate on it? Were they even out then? Surely the 1975 model didn't have those wheels/trim/etc? Picture in Fulham/Brompton Road. Excuse the blur  |

Allow a bit of artistic licence. It's part of a wider campaign - www.campaignlive.co.uk/thework/1347443/...so the dates refer to the launch years of the E21, E30, E36 etc, rather than the specific cars in the ads.  Personally, I think it's a superb campaign. |

Incidentally, if you're in that area, stroll five mins up the road to the West Cromwell Road, you can see all of the billboards together side-by-side.

Great campaign, but I do agree with the OP. The images should be images from the launch year of each model. So to have what is clearly a 1982 E21 on an advert stating 1975 is a bit odd to my OCD!

Presumably there were many meetings in which they argued back and forth and ultimately decided to run, for example, an image of a mint stock '82 rather than whatever shabby/modified '75 they had access to. Or whatever.
The balance of getting the best image versus the ire of the small percentage of people in the know is a tricky one, and you should also factor in the fact that we're now talking about the advert...

The images on every one are great, but surely BMW would have all their archive photos from the launch and every other advertising campaign they've done.
It looks fantastic, but does seem a little bit "wrong" in a way.

I'd guess they wanted a fresh new shoot to fit the aesthetic they had in mind, rather than using the same old stock photos that have been doing the rounds for decades.

Yes the plate's wrong but a 1975 E21 really won't look that different to a 1982. From my knowledge those steel wheels were available back then and the trim won't look that different. From the front things may look more different but I can't see that much difference from the rear of a pre/facelift car.

Agree with both sides on this one. The advertising campaign is great; there don't seem to be many manufacturers who are so cockily confident with their previous automotive range that they can base a new advertisement around it. However, seeing a 'Y plate' next to the words 1975 is equivalent to having a mobile phone mast in the background on an episode of Poldark. In the words of one of the working class characters: BMW - T'aint right, t 'aint fit, t'aint fair, t'aint proper!

The rear '316' badge was different on the 1975 model, but other than that they look very similar. I hadn't noticed the 'Y' plate until it was pointed out!
It is a good campaign. My only reservation with it is that it brings into rather too sharp a focus how the car has not always changed for the better.
The older models were aimed at a more prestigious place in the market - and their fine straight sixes reflected that. Now really, they have taken the Mondeo's market position - and again the rather van like 2 litre diesel reflects this.

I take Dbizzle's point, but I can also see your point OP.
Appreciate this might then have been a thread about 'what's that '75 E21 doing with '82 badging?' but that's less likely to be spotted, IMO, than a blooming great yellow numberplate with an '82 reg next to a caption saying '1975'! All for the sake of coming up with a random, age-related, plate.
Great campaign though. Not spotted it in these here backwoods so thanks for sharing.
Did a double take at the Racing Gold E30. I almost replaced my Mk2 Golf GTI with a C-reg 325i back in 2002. As that car was in Stourbridge, there was every chance it could've been the same one judging by the reg, albeit in much better condition. Looks as if the one in the ad has 2 less doors though.

I guess I see the point - I notice number plates first!
I love the ads - esp. the E30 one - Never forget my first E21 either, that really was a step up for me - Shame they all looked the same after 1998 - and didn't notice an E36 in the campaign in the link above either - Not their greatest, but surely one of their best selling 3 series?

Certainly BMW (as well as other 'premium' brands) have responded well to market demands, i.e. providing fleet and leasing deals, but back in 70's and 80's they still punted plenty of 316's out to folk who probably would have enjoyed motoring more with a high-spec Cavalier or Sierra than an E21/30 with a 1.6 M10 strangled by a hopeless pierburg carb and an interior so spartan it bordered on the masochistic. Me? Couldn't be without one. Haven't been for A Very Long Time... Some 3-series past:      Present:  And future? (VERY tempted by one of these, though struggling to find one that ticks all the boxes)  |
