AND finally, as they say, good news: as we speak even, another courier has just delivered the EBC Ultimax brake pads (a bargain at around £20 per axle). So now I can go lay on the ground, do the oil change, fit the brake pads and tempt it to rain on me. Were your insurance company ok with you fitting brake pads that differ from the manufacturers original specifications? Whilst I get your point EBC Ultimax are no different to say an 'OE' pad supplied from a motor factor. With that in mind I would never fit EBC pads onto a car from my experiences. But some people seem to get on with them .

Morning Chas, Hope to see you at Motofest even though the forecast isn't totally brilliant.
Beat me to the reply there to Hardcore: Chose the EBCs exactly because they claim to be good or better than OEMs. Needed to get them delivered asap and too many of the others I saw online were not necessarily shall we say "kosher" and I didn't have time to peruse "possibles" and send them back if I didn't like them.
To 1300dolly: well done mate, you at least got it in one.
To some of the other "commentators": Can ANYONE explain to me the reason for the childish comments from some posters along the lines of "Do I have to tell my insurance company when I empty the ash tray?" Are we dealing with would-be trolls here? If they're meant to be tongue-in-cheek comments you need to up your supply of smilies.
The point originally replied to was about fitting van tyres to cars and was about telling your insurance company about things that would count as a modification which could impact on the safety of the vehicle, thereby exposing the insurance company to an undeclared risk and thereby exposing the so called insured person to the risk of being declared uninsured.
I think we can begin to assume that some people haven't read the small print on their insurance documents where there's an awful lot of warnings about "If you don't declare then we haven't insured" and of course nobody pays any attention to that recorded message about exactly the same thing when you phone them.
I set out the story about my tyres just to show that even though I thought it would be a simple matter re the insurance, it turned out to be not so simple. I was following well known advice that fitting a tyre of lower speed rating to a performance vehicle without informing your insurance people can be a route to big trouble.
In my initial approach (re the 914s) I was presenting the insurance people with the fact that I was fitting modern rubber from a well known brand which would certainly be better and safer than finding out of date older rubber but unfortunately was one speed rating down on the original. Seemples me thought, in fact hardly worth even telling them or so the perceived wisdom of Joe Public goes. Well, as posted, their reply was much more cautious as in possible need to check with and clear it with the underwriters.
Luckily I then found the KWE recommendation for the 912s at an even higher speed rating than my originals. Well def ok to fit these and all will be well. However since I'd already opened a conversation with the insurer re the 914s I made sure to close the loop by bringing them up to speed on this and bingo positive result all round. Once started never, ever leave open a possible query that could leave you uninsured. You don't control the game, no matter how brilliant your mate's opinion might be, the insurance people make the rules and it's their ball.

Ive got van tyres on the back of the 318, 14" chevy camaro wheels fit a treat over the drum brakes of the smaller motored e36s, and commercials skid brilliant,and last a fair while too I think the insurance posts relate to the majority of cars on here being modified, and as such the insurance is already aware of not stock rolling stock Btw, van tyres do wicked burnouts too

Don't know what they're worth Roscocav as Mercs aren't my car, but well done there for a pretty good piece of rescuing. I keep telling the Memsahib "It's not clutter, somebody, somewhere is probably looking for this stuff right now, so I'm just guarding it". So 100% plaudits to you for keeping them ready.
