Hey all,
Not sure if I'll be able to get any help with this but thought I'd see.
I've put a 2.8 power steering rack on my 2 litre pinto capri and need a pump for it.
Instead of trying to source a pinto pump which runs on a belt and changing all the pulleys, I thought I'd just buy an electric pump and wire it straight to the ignition so it will be on when the car is.
Anyway, I've just got a electric pump from a ford c-max thinking I could just wire a live from the ignition and earth it and that would be it, job done.
However, I've gone to test this today by putting wires straight from the battery to the terminals on the pump and got nothing.
I never thought about this when I bought it, but is it not working because it needs the sensors, which would be on the c-max, to tell it to run?
Obviously I'm not gonna be installing any sensors on the capri but if I know that, I can try find another electric pump+reservoir that will run with just a live and earth.
Thanks for any help, Paul

I've never had a problem with the weight of the steering on a Capri even with wide wheels but Why not put the original rack back on and modify a corsa eps to fit it's in the steering column and is a tried and tested route with escort mk1 and 2, mantas, and lots of other non power steering applications. There will be lots of info on the net for fitting etc
Failing that go to the gym

The feed will be permanent it needs a speed signal to work but you'll have to figure out which wire is which . It will also need a switched live from the ignition . I haven't looked at one closely but most likely two connectors on the pump with a little Ecu to ramp up pressure based on road speed and steering angle . The cheap signal generators for the Mitsubishi corsa epas might do the job or go for an older simpler Saxo or a class pump

I know the motors fitted to Fiat Seicentos have their own ecu in the passenger footwell

Saxo one works with just a live and earth.

Thanks for all the advice, just bought a saxo pump. Wasted money on the c-max one, but hey ho, will teach me to do some research first.
The steering wasn't really a problem to be honest, I just came across a 2.8 rack and crossmember and thought it would be a good thing to have, especially for parking.

I drove a saab 99 with ems quick rack for years, so anything feels pretty light after that. My sierra was manual and was just fine..

It was never a problem, I just like messing about with the car....it is a project after all.
It doesn't help really that it's got wider, lower profile tyres on and a smaller steering wheel.

get a much older pump that just has +ve and -ve from a relay. I helped a mate fit one to a hybrid 100" 3.9EFi Series Land Rover from a late 80s J car - toyota or Nissan?

A Vauxhall corsa steering column is what you need, you can buy kits to put them in mk1/mk2 escorts so I'm sure you could get one pre modified for a Capri, the ones I've seen have a knob to adjust so you can make the steering stiffer or lighter, they work really well,

I've got a saxo pump now that seems to be working fine so I'm going to get some pipes made up and run that. Thanks for all the help. I know the column route probably would have been easier and potentially cheaper but it's done now. I'll post with an update when I've got the pipes and tested it properly. Thanks again for all the help. Paul

Hydraulic will feel a lot better than an epas with a dial as the assistance never fully goes off so can feel a bit vague at speed . With a proper speed and rpm signal the assistance is proportional to road speed above 30 mph so it just measures torque input but with a little control dial it doesn't know how fast your going
