Hi guys. I regisisted on here a while back but it's only lately that I've actually started looking about and already I'm amazed by the skill and passion people have on here. I've got a couple of mates on here and they suggested I did my own thread about my car. I'm not sure if it's retro (yet) but I thought I'd show you what's happened the last 8 years or so that I've had it. It's been a long journey and as you can imagine with a rotary engined car, it's had it ups and downs... Or is that rounds and rounds? I don't know, all I do know is it's been emotional.
This is my second FD. I bought my first back in 2004. Thanks to a certain film about fast and furious cars I was drawn to the world of japanese cars. I fell in love with the FD the first time I saw it and knew I had to have one. At first I didnt think it would ever happen though as when I first sat in one I didn't fit (I'm 6' 3" and to be honest I hardly fit now) and so I nearly went a different route and bought a Toyota Supra. Luckily a quick chat with a tall feller at a car show who had squeezed into an FD was to be the deciding factor and from that point it was always going to be an apfd for me. I couldn't afford a supra anyway as this was back when even a standard twin turbo one was £12k plus and a non turbo around £8k. So much searching was done and in the end I found one locally which I liked and seemed a good price.
It was a more or less standard Type R with only a Blitz Nur spec back box exhaust and blitz twin air filters as modifications. It did have some lovely (I thought) 18" alloys though which helped it stand out from the crowd. Saying that, I think any FD stands out as they are one of the best looking cars to ever come out of Japan.
The only mod I did to the car was to change the rear spoiler to a Veilside combat one. Looking back now it wasn't the best looking but at the time I loved it's curvy lines.
I loved this car and how it drove. It was the most powerful car I'd had at that time even if it was standard-ish. Sadly after only 600 miles I was to have my heart broken when the engine decided it had had enough. It lost all compression and I had to get it rebuilt. At this time I didnt know anything about forums and the world of internetting so I went back to the guy who I bought it off and he helped me out with getting the work done. One of the biggest regrets I've ever had though was i had to sell my 1969 Karmann Cabrio beetle to be able to afford the work.
I don't have many pictures of this one at the moment as they are all on a hard drive of a knackered computer. If I ever get it working again I'll post a few more up. But then this isn't about the old car, it's about the one I have now.
I sold this car in 2006 to help towards buying my first flat. Sad to see it go but I knew I'd be back again one day.
That day was to be only about 18 months later. Once I'd figured out I could survive by myself and not starve the search was on for a replacement FD. With the help and encouragement (pestering) of a good friend Kieron (randywanger on here) the perfect one was found.
This one is a 1999 Type RB. A later and much desirable spec car that had lots of up grades done to it already. The guy selling had just split with his wife and needed the car gone quick and so I got it for what I think now is an absolute steal. £6250 changed hands and I had he joy of a long trip back from Ipswich to get to know my new pride and joy... Rex II.
So there's the beginning of it all. Home safe and sound and my rotary life was complete again.
Straight away I had to change the steering wheel as it was to big for my legs to get under. I bought a Key!s racing (got to love those Japanese company names) wheel and just for the fun of it, a Re Amemyia weighted gear knob
That was it for a little while, all I wanted to do was drive it.
Theres plenty more to come so I'll post up part 2 later if I can
