Really can't put it down to one car....so here's three!!! My Crayford 'prototype'. The only one like it! The story goes that it was made by Crayford for Ford after a shelf fell on the roof of a special order 2 door that was in for a webasto style roof....apparently the original buyer hated it. I loved it because I had the only one! Didn't want to sell her but a split with an ex led to financial difficulties so this car and the estate had to go.... The estate is one of the three... quick 2.0 in daily use for a long time! And finally the 2 door mk4. At the time she was one of only 11 left registered. Rescued from the bangers by a guy in Cornwall....I bought it pretty much unseen and got on 3 trains to Truro to collect it....8 hours there by rail....5.5 hours home to Coventry by road! Original 1300 crossflow junked in favour of a 1600 from a 1600E and non tilt mk5 GL seats fitted before I bought it and mods wise that was it! Dixie horns, 3 door Cosworth recaros, and 4 spokes were the way forward! Ran as a daily for a couple of years and sold her on to get the estate....

I then wanted to start cleaning the interior as it stinks of wood (the material not the smell of a boner) best quote ever!

I bought this beast for £150 with a MOT fail list longer than a roll of Andrex... from a main dealer. It actually passed at an independant station with two blown bulbs and new wipers but there you go.. It had two bouts of being renovated in my care, the first time staying Reynard metallic with a vinyl roof, but by the second time it ended up like this because of the amount of tinwork done and I couldn't warrant the cost of a respray. It ended up with an overdrive gearbox, MGB rear axle, ST-spec uprated suspension, recovered MG Metro seats, K&N's and rejetted carbs, Greenstuff pads and modded front discs and MG Rostyles. Only 100mph flat out (at Snetterton) but 105lb/ft torque from 1500rpm to 5500rpm flat line - it did accelerate very, very well... As far as I know its in London awaiting renovation again.... would I have it back... probably for the right price!!!

There have been many 'better' cars since but this, ran when I was an impoverished student, is still my favourite. It was not standard (Devil exhaust was a hint) and featured equal amounts of old school lag followed by ferocious torque steer. It turned up on EBay a few years ago, but too many other commitments at the time meant that would have been a Very Bad Idea.

This magnificent old bucket. My first car and the only one of the two I've ever owned that I have driven... Otherwise, this one. I grew up being ferried around in this old bus. I mostly remember the windscreen exploding one day and getting stuck to the seats on hot days.

I've had well over 100 cars since passing my test in 1992, but this one has to be the most memorable for me.... I'm sure there's a thread on it somewhere on here. It's a Carlton GSi3000, started life as a 24v automatic, previous owner converted it to manual, then back to auto again. I acquired it as little more than a shell with not much interior, converted it to manual (again), stripped what was left of the interior out so it was little more than a shell with front seats. Had problems with the 24v engine so swapped it, the 2nd engine also failed so I converted it to the earlier 12v unit. I hand painted the car with Hammerite satin black paint, it used to have several different coloured panels. The car pulled like a train, handled really really well, until i stuffed it into a wall on a track and bent the otherwise rot free shell. Sold it to another RR member for spares. Loved this car, put a lot of effort into getting it just right for my requirements. Had it nearly 3 years, which is a long time for me to keep a car and not lose interest! Lost my licence hooning this up the A1 at a 3 figure speed. Out of all the cars I've had, this is the one I'd have back tomorrow like a shot.

Owned this for 11 years , after smoking around in it for a year i decided to buy a 2nd car for winter running as the petrol bill was taking all my funds, and it would be cheaper in the long run It was actually a nice ride , went all over the UK on holidays in it , Didnt really want to sell but it was rotting away , the last year of ownership i used it once , so it had to go I still have loads of spares in the sheds ,

Most memorable car 1981 Opel Kadett 1.3GL bought by my parents in 1982 andsold to me in 1992. Spanish ivory paint with a gawdy burgundy interior. Totally indestructible and could be fixed on the side of the road with a pair of pliers and a piece of barbed wire fence. Have been trying to find a decent one for years now to replace it but nothing. Sadly pics are old blurry Polaroid pics

too many to narrow down to just one. this car was my second or third on the road, and is why i have a thing about stacklight mercs- its wasnt a particularly remarkable car, just chopped springs, rims and a traveller exhaust, but i loved that car. many good times had with it. it also taught me there was better cars out there than aircooled VWs, and not to be so blinkered in my approach to other marques and models. this was probably my first proper serious build- loads of proper out-there ideas, mega low, static. could be driven that low flat out all the time. applying a hot rod build ethos to a VW. it also signalled me leaving aircooled VW ownership, mostly cos of how fickle the aircooled crowd are. everyone wanted to be my best friend after i built this, whereas before theyd happily ignore me. rather than find this acceptance welcoming, it did the opposite. it really was about the car you owned, not who were. this car has more of me in than any other will probably ever have. 8-ish years, stuck with it and kept hold of it through thick and very, very thin. still unfinished, still will be for a while longer, rebuilt it 3 or 4 times already until perfection is achieved. taught me more about traditional hot rods and honed my skills more than anything else ever could- this was my 'back to basics' build. something cool, fun, that i could afford to drive every day, cost sod all in parts and wouldnt take forever to put together.a car about having fun in cars with mates again, as things had all got a bit serious given some of the stuff i work with. i got a bit carried away as i always seem to, but a couple of grand and 3 and a half-ish years later, it hit the roads. its a bit of a beater, but thats in its favour as it means it gets used and abused. although some woman from up the street abused it a little too much cos she don't understand what right of way means..... still, gunna have to get it back togehter for the gathering, needs to have retro rides current car of the year there don't we?

Had a standard 1.6 205GTi, fitted 1.9 engine and bits, threw various wheels at it threw crappy turbo conversion at it that never really worked. So threw more money and a Dimma kit ruined it totally but loved it.
All of this pre digital photos but currently still sits in the garage awaiting more love again. Owned it 12 years and I hate to think how much money was spent on it.

Well I've had a fair few cars and an awful lot have been big RWD 6 pot Vauxhall/Opels which I absolutely love but we are talking about your most memorable car so this one is gonna be a surprise Basically a 205 3 door XS in a fancy frock - 85 horses was just right. One of the most enjoyable FWD cars to drive and the steering was so communicative add that to a lovely balanced chassis with good spring and damping rates that soaked up bumps yet kept the body in control. One of the few FWD cars that you could steer on the throttle, can't remember how many miles I did in it but it was a lot. Torn from my hands as a result of a divorce settlement with the lunatic I married (she took the car and cash - I kept the house and cats - not sure if she got the better deal) As a result we (the 205 and I never finished out relationship or got any closure) and it remains at the top of my list to this day..... A brief flirtation with a 205 GTi with 115 horses did not come close to changing my mind in fact it proved that it had 30 horses too many and introduced me to lift off oversteer a number of times (something the little Lacoste never did) Owned from 86 to 91 - looks like she died in 2003 as that was the last time taxed - personally I'm surprised it lasted that long obviously the ex sold it as her record of car ownerships read like Henry VIII's wives (she was a "car killer")

Bit of a depressing one. 68 Dodge Charger i owned around 2004 Was a dream car, D.O.H, D.M.C.L (yes, i know those were 69's), Bullitt etc yet i owned it less than two years . In that time i rebuilt the suspension, steering and removed a ton of sand from the chassis rails/inside etc (i was the first to get it on the road since it's import by California Connection) and undersealed/Waxoyled it, got it sitting and running nice. Was originally a 383 but had a very stout 318 fitted (was surprisingly good on fuel), still had the big block rear axle though. Was solid and ran very well but i sold it as i could foresee it needing a load of money spent, it still had the original wiring which was pretty rotten and the paint (recent respray) was starting to microblister in places, yet all the cars i've had since and the money i've spent could have been "invested" in the Charger as it'd now be worth three times what i sold it for Even if i'd just ran it and let it get scabby it'd still be worth way more than what it cost me back then. Forgeting the value though, most sickening thing is i'll never, ever, get the chance to own another. Still .

Without a doubt my old Vennie, built her up from the ground and had so many memories, tears, spanners thrown, blood let, huge moments of accomplishment, and huge moments of Oh for f**ks sake. Took 2 years and much money and work. I know folk have done a hell of a lot better, but for me as never done such before it was a biblical moment when she passed the MOT and it was me who made it happen. God I miss her

My old Evo V. The car I'll always wish I'd kept. 382 horse powers, Cusco suspension and braces all round, full corner weight setup. It scared the hell out of me everytime I drove it. It's just a shame fuel prices went so high when I had it or it'd definitely still be around. It lives in Paris now so I'll never have to see it and try buying it back.

For me it'd be my 1964 Sunbeam Rapier MKIV in 1981. I'd just got married, was totally skint yet need transport so put an advert in the local paper for a "banger". Numerous offers of cars but in the end settled on the Rapier for £50. Never broke down and fun to drive. Scruffy with one wing (Gazelle / Minx type with cut out for gutter so slightly different to Rapier item) still in transit paint. Had it for 3 years and only got rid because of moving house but could find anywhere to store as "upgraded" to a 1970 1200 Beetle I'll try and dig out pics later but still have very fond memories of the car which, to me, was like a mini 1950's US model in styling.

So many cars..... I suppose my 'most memorable' was my old mk5 SPU797W. Originally my dad's company car it had more than one close call with other vehicles while he owned it, got well bent out of shape after an incident with the back of a transit pickup while I owned it and put back to rights in five days thanks to 'knowing people', chap called Tony Zammitt made a grand job of putting it back together again. Cabbed it for 3 years around the Sevenoaks / Swanley area then it started to rot away in some stupid places and became uneconomical to repair. Had to go but 171,000 miles and pulled like the proverbial train, I'd have it back anytime... long gone but i'll never forget the good times. cortina3 by Adrian Southgate, on Flickr cortina2 by Adrian Southgate, on Flickr There are others that stir memories But the old Cortina will always have a space in my heart.
