Excuse my apparent ignorance on this matter.. I'm presently reassembling a jaguar xj6 (series 2, tho' I'm sure 4.2's all the same with respect the question) & noticed something I'd better address before attempting to start the engine:
It looks as though the camshafts should have two external oil feeds going to them, but there is nothing fitted on mine. I've established that something is clearly missing (thanks Mr Haynes for that) but I cannot find where the feed comes FROM.
Can anyone suggest where the feed to the camshaft comes from on the engine? Thanks in advance..

there is a pipe that is plumbed into a gallery at the bottom of the block on the exhaust side at the bellhousing end. it then splits into two and goes to each camshaft at the back of the head. be carefull doing these bolts up as they can quit easily strip the thread out of the head.

Hi 3Point, as per Bozwell's post: as far as I can make out if you check your Hayne's manual (mine is no 242) exploded diagram on p18, item 48 methinks (doesn't show bottom end location clearly so thanks to Boz for that.

Firstly, thanks for the info, however, my block appears not to have the hole drilled/tapped. there is what looks like a small circular flat boss right next to the bellhousing flange, but no drilling for oil.
Any ideas?

well the race engines take a feed from the oil gallery side under the carburettors so remove one of the blanking plugs and drill and tap for a Banjo. make sure the feed pipe doesn't come into contact with the starter cable. aeroquip pipe will be fine for the feed and more reliable than the metal pipe which are known to split anyway.
there are aftermarket kits for the cam oil feed or source the nessasery connections and banjos.
