So.. scrolling through MB's threads of shares and stuff, This happened Looks to be of the transit family, or at least shares some DNA? I'm actually pretty useless at this interwebs stuff, but I've spent a huge amount of time trying to research what it actually is, but nothing! It's not (I think?) using mk3/4/5 running gear etc, as the pcd looks too small, plus the rear axle looks to be different.. I'm really interest in the factory arches/skirts for my own camper, hence the interest.. Any help please?

It's a GAZelle. GAZ's answer to the Transit. I did think it was a restyled Transit, but apparently it's not. That one is an early 2000s model, from what little I can find out.

its a Russian Gaz, but apart from looking like a mk3 transit from the rear I'm not sure what else they share

Yeah, my mistake (edited the post), I did think they were a rebadge/restyle of a Transit until I did a bit more reading.

I did think they were just a facelift transit too but looking closer at google pics every panel looks slightly different!? I hope they used lada 1300 running gear or something equally underpowered!

The GAZelle is the same as the Transit just like the Lada Aleko is the same as the Talbot Alpine. That is to say you think it is, but it's not at all.

That's such a sad story! Another case of what might have been. Sorry to go off topic but I get a bit misty eyed for the Sherpa / LDV now. I used to run a fleet of 30, 52' plate LDV's and really miss them now. When we first got our fleet we were in shock that we were hated so much to have to run the prehistoric things rather than the Transits we specified. They had the new Transit engines though, which was actually the worst things about them. They all ran for ten years, top speed was 65/70mph and starter motor's, clutches and king pins were the usual bug bear. We did lose a few along the way, as when the Van's hit 150,000miles the Ford electronic fuel pump would fail and cost over a grand to replace and have reprogrammed which wasn't worth spending on a ten year old van. At the end it was the part's situation that was the getting the hardest to deal with as LDV had gone under and they all seemed to suddenly wear out door hinges and we couldn't get any anywhere! Advantages were that they were basic (Apart from the Ford modern transit engine) and could carry heavy loads for they're size as a long wheelbase caged 3.5t van. I'm sure our's had a carrying capacity of 1.5t. Back in 2012 we must have redeemed ourselves because we got a posh fleet of Merc sprinter van's with electric windows, and air conditioning. What a load of poo they are! The front axle is overweight with three people in the cab and rear carrying capacity is around 800kg. Constant dealer recalls and electric problems, oil leaks, coolant leaks, rust, gearbox failure and the most recent plague we've found is that the cheap cast timing bicycle cog likes to lose teeth around 60,000 miles and for your convenience located at the back of the engine!!! We do indeed need another van like the LDV. Cheap, lightweight and simple! Maybe we could import a fleet of Russian Gaz?

One of the last vans I hired was one of these (may not be true, I seemed to hire alot at one point lol): Was annoyed they gave me a crappy LDV instead of the transit I ordered, and you know what, it was great lol.
