With the rear suspension being airbags, whenever you bring it down off the jack it looks like this... Badass! However, it's not happening. She too comfy for this stick slammage based shenanigans. However, hopefully I'll be sorting the arch clearance (width wise) soon, so it should look a little more purposeful.

Has the lpg ever been serviced or checked while you've had it as those plugs look like it's running very lean? Still a cool car to daily without the whitewallls Not been checked as yet, but I will at some point. Lpg runs a lot hotter than petrol, so I assumed the lightness cane from the extra heat..

Whitewall saga! I laughed at those pics. Can't you just slap on a bit of emulsion? I don't know what to make of this car. It's certainly original. For some reason it gets me thinking of 'Boss Hogg' from Dukes of Hazzard. Haha - I don't think emulsion will quite hit the spot! I'm abandoning the whitewall look in favour of something new soon anyway, I hope!

Wow! No updates since October! Must do better... You may have noticed I've refreshed all my build threads, cleansing for the soul!
So, this aircraft carrier sized livingroom on wheels has caused me some reet dramas since October.... Not got many pics, so I'll have to let the words paint them. I use it as my daily, granted it's a bit on the large side, and occasionally causes parking issues, but it's a cracking daily with the LPG system and all.
Or it was!
For a week or so, I'd occasionally get a very faint whiff of hot electrics.... I couldn't pin it down, it was intermittent, and very faint! I ignored it, hoping it'd go away. Has this tactic ever worked for anyone else? It didn't work for me! It smelt really bad one drive, and then I realized I had no lights!! Permission to say male chicken. The light switch had melted itself. On digging about through the Lincoln forums, it seemed a common issue. The back of the switch develops a loose connection, causing it to get hot, and eventually melt the wiring!
So no lights in the middle of winter, when my morning and evening commute was in pitch darkness, I had to lay it up for a bit whilst I waited for a new switch to make it's way over the Atlantic. I rolled the Capri back into daily duties. The poor old thing gets used and abused in rain, hail, ice.... Good fun though!
About 2 weeks later the switch landed.

It came without the internal gubbins. It took me about 20 minutes, and an accidental butchering of the old one to realize there was a simple button on the back to get the internals out... oops... Anyway, I proceeded to strip down the ENTIRE DASH! Yes, the entire dash needed to come out to replace a headlight switch. There were so many screws and small parts I had a line of ducktape on the top with everything laid out in order in case I lost something! It took about an hour and a half to get it all out. I pulled the switch assembly out and repaired the burnt/melted areas before replacing the switch. Assembly is the reverse of removal.... Except can you get the facia back on without losing blood/the will to live? No you can't! Anyway, much later.... We had lights! It was great getting behind the wheel again, love driving the Capri but the Lincoln is THE most comfortable motor to commute in It was great driving it again! For a week.

I just typed out the next part of the drama and my useless laptop decided to delete. Here follows the less comprehensive 'IneedacupofteaandI'mnottypingallthatoutagain' version
The shifter started to play up. I wouldn't go out of park very easily. It's only take 30 seconds at worst to begin with, but it got worse. I was fiddling with it for 5 minutes on one occasion before it went into D..
After struggling for a week or so, it left me a bit stuck at the footy pitch as it took about 15 minutes of cocking about to get it out of park. I realized that when I pressed the brake pedal, I could no longer hear the telltale shifter release click.
I chocked the pedal and checked the back. No brake lights! I ordered a new brake light switch and took it off the road again. Out comes the Capri again..
I had to move it a couple of times whilst it was off the road. I started it in N, popped to D and off I went shifting the cars around. Then one day I went to move it (the switch still hadn't landed) and I heard a big CRACK....
The shifter went all floppy.
Like a dead fish.
Not very shiftery at all.
I very calmly said "oh deary me," and gently closed the door before heading in the house. *This may or may not have been what happened.

The next day the brake light switch arrived...... yeah! So, when I eventually got time to investigate I found this: The column 'shifter tube' has snapped in half! I'd clearly been a little more persuasive than I realised when it wasn't shifting..... Gah... so I ordered a new one, found a local (as in England..) guy on a forum who sold me a brand new one. Parts are easy and cheap enough to find to be fair, it just takes a while if it's from America. I may have found a good UK contact now though. Anyway, dash stripped again. I got it down to a point but completely ran out of time due to work. I asked my mechanic mate to finish the job for me. It took him the whole day! I believe he also said "oh deary me," on a couple of occasions. It wasn't a nice job. All done now though, this was in January and it's been great ever since. I looked up some of the problems associated with these cars and I've now gone through (in the space of 60 miles) pretty much all of the common faults! To be fair, I put it into heavy use from the day I got it, it's done well. I think I accelerated the common faults and got them all over with at the same time. Forgot to say, I replaced some balljoints for the MOT and filled all the grease points. It drives much better now, much more accurate steering. I've been back in it on a daily basis for months now. Loving it again! Here it is yesterday (I left the LPG filler cap on the roof at the petrol station). Looking clean Next step? Oil change followed by letting Mr Whizzy meet the exhaust system. I need to get that V8 to sing. I'm currently thinking of removing all 4 cats, both silencers, and both resonators. I'll replace the H pipe with an X pipe (youtube videos suggest a better sound) and fit 2 cherry bombs halfway along the pipe. Going to have straight pipe for the rest. I feel that if I place the cherry bombs halfway and have lots of pipe after, the sound will be better.. We'll see! I'll update as soon as exhaust progress is made

Cherry bombs tend to be a bit 'raspy', whereas Flowmasters allow noise but with a more bassy tone.

Good to read an update on this one. Nice when the update after a long period of nothing is that things are mostly going well rather than catastrophically bad. I couldn't really tell in your picture what bit of the column had broken, I'm not sure what I'm looking at.

Yeah sorry about the pics - i had taken loads of all the jobs but in the time between doing them and now, my phone memory was mostly wiped! If you look at the overdrive bit of the shift indicator panel (the O with the D in it) and go straight down there is a silver tube with a light silver but across it - the light silver bit is the crack! So that tube is connected to the column shifter and slides up and down the steering shaft. Only mine didn't any more!
Yeah it's all going rather swimmingly at the moment (touch wood). Ive just bought a K and N oil filter that has an anti drain back valve and 6 litres of 5w30 so I'll be giving it an oil change asap. I've also managed to track down a chrome arch from a limo (one of mine blew off on a storm and disappeared). Job's a goodun

I would prefer Flowmaster, Magnaflow or Dynomax. Been looking through youtube.. i think i prefer the sound of the cherry bombs! The flowmasters seem to have a quieter tinnier 'hollow' sound. The cherry bombs seem to sound a bit more 'muscle' - as in throaty and crackly. Have a look at 'lincoln towncar cherry bomb/flowmaster' vids on YouTube and see what you think. Either way, they all sound bloody awesome and i just can't wait to get on the exhaust!

Fantastic, this is what owning a retro is all about, driving something awesome day to day, I love it. Keep sharing those issues you have, they are what seperate a boring car from an interesting car!

This is awesome! Love seeing old US tanks being used in Blighty. Sounds like such an awesome daily - the interior looks like such a nice place to be (I bet it takes the pain out of motorway driving!) Because I gravitate towards them, I would say Cherry Bombs as I've yet to hear a car sound bad with one. They have a more 'old school', crackle sound with pop-bang on the overrun even at low speeds. Just my 2 cents
