Citroen ID Familiale, worth getting?

Theres a really cheap Citroen Familiale for sale locally, as in scrap money. Instead of properly repairing rust, the owner has glued a lot of galvanized duct plating everywhere, including the rear windows.

A rare car but a rusty DS is a world of pain with a bodged one being even worse. There was a thread on here about someone who was restoring one and even by his standards it was the most rotten car he had worked on. The biggest issue is that Citroen used many sheets of metal together which makes them a royal rust trap.

Whilst prices for them are on the climb I personally would not touch it unless it was near enough free. A friend of mine has a very good DS and even that is giving him issues (suspension, light problems (as in the steering) and finally injection problems (albeit this is only limited to the cars with fuel injection). A year ago I was offered a Citroen DS Safari which was very rough on the body and interior but very solid and running for £3.75k. If I didn't own a very unreliable retro at the time which was haemorrhaging cash I probably would have gone for it .

This is the car, 300 pounds, wich is what the scrapman pays (theres a thing you pay when you buy a new car, that you get back when you deliver the car to the junkyard, currently 300 pounds)

He also has a regular DS that comes with it, but its rusty too, but atleast its good for patterns for stuff. I have seen the car a few years ago, it wasnt BAD, but definatly in need of some work (and a heatgun to get the glue off..... )

£300 isn't a lot of money, at least not in the UK, I'm not sure how the market stands in Norway on these things. The door repairs are magnificent in their own way and the rear window solution really rather brilliant. I suspect you could make a good car out of it if you weren't too worried about restoring to original, a prime candidate for some modifying shenanigans.

If you pay £300 and it's too far gone presumably you could still scrap it and get your £300 back? If that's the case, what are you waiting for!

I could even get it, strip it completely for parts, and still get 300 just for the bare shell Not that i'd want to do that though. Had a chat with the guy's son, might be getting it in 2 weeks (work takes all my time up until then, it seems...)

I had one about 15 years ago, that I did all the structural welding on then sold for £500 cause I ran out of garage space. I have kicked myself ever since, especially when I see them for £10+k!

I have a vague feeling the doors (but not the windows) might actually be the same as the saloon, so maybe the other car has better ones. Good luck with the project :-)
