Hey Retro Rides. As the title really, is there much love for the T3/T25? My neighbour has recently bought one as a camper, my good old mother asked why I had not owned one yet and I didn't really have an answer, so now I am thinking about buying one. Is there much love for them out there? Does any one own one? What are they like to live with? Cool, good fun? I am sure I read about impreza conversions, I can not leave anything standard so what would a retro rides "spanner rating" be on that? I would kind of like one to take down to the coast for weekends, fit the back out with a rock and roll bed of some sort, throw the kayak on the roof and the rods in the back and go and have some long weekend fun. Sorely tempted by one, or a T4...

If you do buy one buy the best example possible. I had one in 2012 and when it worked it was cool to drive about in, very slow, very uncomfortable but cool. It did however take up all of my spare time and money only for it to break again, I had little to no interest in cars after that and sold it. At least I can say I tried though.

I'm a bit of a fan . I've had over the years about 5 of them. One day, the brown one will come back to life..

I have one, an early doka 1,9 wasserboxer. Love it. Fun to drive, reasonably quick and can follow normal traffic. A bit thirsty though... Useful to, being a doka :-) Want to modify it and have a plan, but 3 children under the age of three means it has to stay stock for a while :-) (see this thread:http://retrorides.proboards.com/thread/176528/vw-t25-modify-outside-norm ) Also, for more pics, see retrorides.proboards.com/thread/137831/love-brick

I think they have become popular over the last 4 or 5 years as Bays have become silly money. And as a result of this, over the last 3 or 4 years the price has rocketed and they are now becoming unafforable.
But there are some really nice ones out there, just a shame teh days of picking a usable 1 up for a grand is long gone

They are the one for camping. I've got a 1980 aircooled westie and it is perfect for the 3 of us. A mate has a 1.9 td gypsy and that is massive and like a small flat inside! Another mate has a westie wide body pickup with a na 1.9 diesel that will be for sale soon.

I spend a lot of time sleeping in the roof of one of them.
It also spawned my love for 'one sided toast' thanks to it's grill.
My Dad had one on a 'W' plate and it was our only car and we had it for years. Would love one myself now.

Not as tho i'm biased or anything, but they're ace I've owned 5 now, various engines, specs and lhd/rhd.... I've an early bay also and they are complete opposites to drive, basically everyone hankers for the older vans from a 'looks' point of view (ie split screens, then bays),truth is tho the newer the better from a practicality point of view, and driving experience. If your used to working on classics, easy enough to work on and modify, limit is how much you wanna spend really !

I've had a few, they're the best van of all time. I haven't got one anymore, which is a shame because prices have gone through the roof, but my dad still has 2 rhd Syncros, a camper and a rare as hens tits single cab used daily. Here's a sweet airbagged one I've just seen, built and owned by a genius called Shiv

I adore them - my grandad had one when I was a kid, sadly I'm yet to find any photos showing the reg. They're one of the few VWs that aren't hugely spec and colour dependent to be charming.

We loved our Green Aircooled 2.0 Westy. It was sadly stolen a few years back but not before some great trips, one all the way to Sienna in Italy and back. So much fun to drive. Thirsty as yer nan is for sherry on Boxing day though. Our Polizei t25 Westfalia camper by Little Pixel, on Flickr One day I'd love to have a restomod Doka / Doppelkabin with neat Suby install and period-sympathetic mods; This sort of thing:

They are nice vans. Gearboxes are really a sore point with them at this stage though, all the 2nd hand ones are knackered, no matter what you pay. A rebuilt is £600 ish. I stockpiled any cheap 2nd hand box I could get but I've run out, so when this one goes I'm going to have to get one built - as such, the picture of one doing a burnout actually made me cringe. Ignoring that, they are decent vans, but obviously with VW scene tax on the parts. More room in the back than later vw stuff and they drive well. I've had mine for 4 years now. It started off as a 2.1WBX panel van. I took the WBX out, put a 2.0 golf gti engine in, then cut it to bits and fitted windows. I've never owned anything for more than about 6 months, so the fact that this has stuck around speaks volumes. I commuted 40 miles to work every day it for over a year.
