Hi all, looking for help as I am at a loss as to my current problem.
My car was running fine after a recent MOT, typically the day after parking it up I go to start it and all I get is it turning over. I see that it sparks fine so ignition seems good, spark plugs are dry though which makes me see this is a fuel problem. Being an amateur and not having a multi-meter I can't do much checking of the electrics.
But I noticed the fuel pump does not make a noise when the ignition's turned on (I'm assuming I would hear noise from the fuel pump?) Anyway I had a look at the pump and it was quite battered, hanging precariously and seemed to have been there for a long time, so I have replaced it with a new one. I have done this and still the car doesn't want to bleeding start!(again the fuel pump is silent).
I realized a schoolboy error I made. I never checked the relay or the fuse for the fuel pump (idiot!) Fuse is okay, then I bridged 87 to 30 on the relay (this is how you bypass it) and still nothing.
Firstly could someone tell me any more obvious faults that could be causing it to not start and where to look that don't require a multi-meter. Secondly If nothing obvious turns up I will buy a multi-meter, could someone then show me where to use it to test for electrical faults.
Hopefully I've explained clearly enough for you, I'd like to add i'm putting this up for sale (check for sale ads after I fix this problem) so this couldn't of come at a worse time (plays sad snow patrol song). So your technical knowledge will be greatly appreciated. Thank You!

Hi, bridging 30 to 87 is OK, But has 30 actually got power? Use a bulb to test. Is any power getting down to the fuel pump? Use a bulb again. Does the vehicle have an inertia switch? check to see if it needs re setting.

Ok I will check that tomorrow, thanks Colin.

The fuel pump doesn't engage until the engine is cranked over on these. Bridge the fuel pump relay socket and get the pump working independently of the car to test. If it doesn't start then you need to test where the fuel is actually getting to, first place to check is the filter, then remove the intake hose from the metering head and lift the flap, you should hear the injectors spraying.
My pump was hanging too, the mountings were totally rotten! These cars are worth hanging onto, they are picking up in value now

I have ran the battery to the fuel pump to give it power and it worked. I have also ran a wire from the 30 port on the relay and there is power.
What I didn't realise until I found the diagram of the fuel system is that there is another fuel pump in the bottom of the tank, and so i decided to get my spare battery and put power to it and it didn't make any sound so i assume its had it, is this right? I notice they are sharing earth and power leads between both fuel pumps so this would stop a complete circuit connection. So is it the in-tank fuel pump that is broken? Thanks

Hi, it sounds like it might be the in tank pump. The in tank pumps are quiet and the fuel will act as noise insulation, so check if it's actually pumping fuel out.

Hi, it sounds like it might be the in tank pump. The in tank pumps are quiet and the fuel will act as noise insulation, so check if it's actually pumping fuel out. Colin On mine, the PO fitted a hidden switch for the fuel pumps and on switching the supply on you can definitely hear (rightly or wrongly?) The front pump working followed by the the in tank pump a second later (at this I point I can turn the key and she fires up) dunno if this helps in any way?

The in tank pump is a riser pump to help pump fuel to the main pump. I had this problem with mine but it's worth checking the tank isn't silted up or corroded inside blocking up the mesh filter on the in tak pump.

Also buy some new spade connectors as they rust badly and might not come off in one piece and a new rubber washer for the in tank pump when you take it off. It's an easy job once the pipe is off and the plugs disconnected it just unscrews with a big spanner. Give it a clean and test it. Have a good feel around in the tank for sludge and rust and if you find some then you need to get the tank cleaned out.

Thanks for the input everyone, i'm pretty backward when it comes to electrics but if I took off the power and earth wires for the in tank pump and put them on a light bulb and it lit when trying to start the car then it would mean it is not an electrical fault right?
Also if I used a wire to connect the power and earth wires together i assume this would bypass the in tank pump, make a complete circuit and the car would start?

Hi.
Question 1 - Yes, that's right, that proves the there's power to the pump.
Question 2 - No, that's called a short, that will blow the fuse or burn the wiring.
You will need the in tank pump to raise the fuel to the injection pump.

Hi everyone, Just an update for those of you who gave me tips on solving this problem (always nice to find out what happens in the end?) to the fuel problems I've had with the car. The problem was something I couldn't solve so I took it to an auto electrician, he found out the problem was the fuse was arc'ing because it was a tad loose and it stopped the fuel pump system coming on. Simple as that eh?
Also it had a problem with the battery going flat after 2 days, it turned out incorrect relays had been fitted in 2 of the ports drawing power from the battery, so if you have ever have a problem of your battery running flat it may be worthwhile making sure you have the correct relays for your car!!
On another front I am selling my 924 so please look on the for sale page in the next few hours.I did have it on gumtree but unfortunately I mainly got calls and texts from the day-dreamers and the time-wasters so it is no longer on there. Hopefully putting it on this website I will get some sensible peoples, Many thanks.
